The future just got a whole lot brighter as OnePlus launched its newest phone on Wednesday. The new OnePlus 8T features a flat, flexible display with 8,192 automatic brightness levels. The screen can quickly adjust to fluctuating light levels and provide an enhanced experience for the user. But will people flock to get the new Android phone?

While OnePlus likely isn't the first brand that pops into most people's minds when it comes to buying a new smartphone, the company has a history of making good quality phones at decent prices. The Chinese smartphone manufacturer was founded by entrepreneurs Pete Lau and Carl Pei in 2013 and is currently primarily owned by rival Oppo. The OnePlus 8T is the third phone to be released by the company this year, following the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro, which launched in April. Both of these phones features AMOLED panels with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 CPU (an octa-core processor with a clockspeed of up to 2.84 GHz), and have curved Gorilla Glass on the front and back, covering an anodized aluminum frame.

Running on the same CPU, the new OnePlus 8T builds on the success of the previous phones in the company's flagship line but making things a little flatter. While the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro feature curved displays, the latest 5G device features a bright, flat 6.55-inch (2,400 x 1,080) AMOLED HDR10+ display that makes it ideal for gaming and watching videos. As with the other phones in the series, the screen is 120Hz and has a 240Hz touch sampling rate. It has a peak brightness of up to 1,100 nits of and boasts a JCND rating of 0.3, which OnePlus says makes the OnePlus 8T the smartphone with the greatest color accuracy on the market. On the audio side, it features Dolby Atmos sound with dual stereo speakers.

Camera & Other OnePlus 8T Specs

OnePlus 8T

The OnePlus 8T uses a quad-camera system, consisting of a 48-megapixel main lens, 16-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens with a 123-degree field of view, a 5-megapixel macro lens for close-up shots and a 2-megapixel monochrome lens. The front-facing camera is 16-megapixel. The phone can also automatically switch into different camera modes depending on the lighting situation. It can also record video at up to 4K at 60 fps and includes various features, such as video tracking, stabilization, adding bokeh effects and a nightscape video mode for low-light situations. If this last feature works well, it can be a real boon as most smartphones do a horrible job at shooting video when it's dark out.

The OnePlus 8T also comes with Android 11 out of the box, which currently isn't the case for most non-Pixel smartphones. Technically, the phone runs on OxygenOS 11, which is the company's own version of Android, but unlike fellow Chinese smartphone maker Huawei, OnePlus isn't banned by the U.S. government so it works with the Google Play Store. The phone uses a 4,500 mAh battery which promises a day of life and with its new Warp Charge 65 cable, it can reach 60-percent in about 15 minutes.

The price is good too, especially considering the version that is coming to North America has 256GB of storage and a whopping 12GB of RAM. Available in lunar silver or aquamarine green, the OnePlus 8T can be pre-ordered now and will go on general sale on October 23 in the U.S. for $749 and in Canada for C$1,099. Those who pre-order will also get a mystery gift. Obviously, since it's a mystery, it's not clear what the gift will be, but Wednesday's live stream did also unveil new wireless earbuds, OnePlus BudsZ, as well as cases for the new phone, so there's a chance it's one of those.
