As a formative 2000s teen drama for many audiences, One Tree Hill is largely beloved due to its incredibly nuanced and relatable characters. Both the teenagers and adults receive incredible amounts of care and development in their tenures on the series. Tree Hill might be a fictional small town, but its core cast of characters feels true to life.

Although all members of the main cast are carrying their own burdens and traumas, many of them find ways to move on with their lives and build something better. From Keith and Karen to Nathan and Haley, the residents of Tree Hill are all unique and authentic in their own ways, and all have signature quotes that perfectly encapsulate who they are.

Whitey Durham: "I Know You Want Some Answers, But What Is The Right Answer? Because There Is No Answer. There's Just Life."

As the basketball coach at Tree Hill High during the series' early years, Whitey Durham was also the voice of reason and parental figure that many students needed despite his seemingly gruff and old-fashioned exterior. But even though the residents of Tree Hill came to him for advice on a regular basis, he never shied away from making it known that he wasn't a man with all the answers. Whitey lived a difficult life, including the loss of his great love Camilla, but he always managed to put the needs of others above his own, even when he didn't always have the solution.

Deb Scott: "Life Sucks. I Need A Drink."

Deb Scott deserved a lot better than what she was given. Any time she made progress, she was inevitably set back again due to her manipulative husband Dan's machinations. She tried her best to be a good mother, but she struggled to keep her family functioning as she dealt with addiction.

Although Deb had one of One Tree Hill's best friendships with Karen, even that bond would be broken by Deb's addictive tendencies and Dan's interference. She would get a second chance at life as a grandmother, but for most of her time in the series, her life was difficult and alcohol and pills were her escape.

Keith Scott: "That Voice In Your Head That's Saying There's No Way Out? It's Wrong."

Keith was the series' first real loss in season 3. But even in his brief time in the series, Keith established himself as one of the show's strongest voices of reason and most passionate supporters. As a quasi-father to Lucas, Keith was always willing to provide the struggling teenager with the guidance he needed.

In addition, Keith and Karen were one of One Tree Hill's best couples, due in part to Keith's willingness to support Karen in all areas of her life. He always went above and beyond for those he loved - and even those he only barely knew, as evidenced by his final interaction with a suicidal Jimmy during the Tree Hill High shooting episode.

Karen Roe: "No Matter Where You Go, Or Who You Become, This Place Will Always Be With You."

Karen Roe was the mother that all residents of Tree Hill deserved to have - and in many ways, she completely embodied all that was good about the sleepy North Carolina town. She didn't have it easy in life. After becoming a teen mother, Karen worked harder than almost anyone in town to make ends meet for her and her son.

No matter what life threw at her, Karen never lost sight of her hopeful disposition, but also the quality of being wise beyond her years. She was always there to support not only her son Lucas but his closest friends, too.

Dan Scott: "Every Good Story Needs A Villain, Lucas. I'm Sorry, But I'm Yours."

From abusing his sons to killing his own brother in cold blood, Dan Scott committed many terrible acts over the course of One Tree Hill's 9 seasons. He was one of the series' clearest-cut villains from the very beginning, always driven by his own selfishness, arrogance, and greed.

For many years, however, Dan tried to perfect the idyllic image of a true family man and a good person. But eventually, he became tormented by his guilt over killing Keith. After serving time in prison for the crime, he began to accept his true role as a villain in his family's lives.

Nathan Scott: "The People I Admire Are The People Who Carve A Life For Themselves After Their Dream Dies."

No one could have predicted that Nathan would become one of One Tree Hill's most viable romantic partners. He was once as arrogant and entitled as his father. But through an incredible arc of character development driven by love and loss alike, Nathan became arguably the best man in all of Tree Hill.

Nathan's dreams of basketball stardom were frequently dashed due to numerous health crises. But every time his plans changed, he rose to the challenge and carved a new life for himself - most importantly including his roles as an incredible husband to Haley and a loving father to Jamie and Lydia.

Haley James Scott: "If We're Not Out There Looking For The One We Wanna Be With Forever, Then What Are We Doing?"

Haley James was always a more realistic depiction of what it means to be a teenager. She never bought into the unrealistic expectations placed on teenage girls of gaining popularity through promiscuity. From day one, Haley was very clear about what she wanted: love.

Haley was driven by a seemingly endless source of compassion. She rarely put herself first, and even when she did to pursue her music career, she ultimately regretted everything because it meant losing the love she so desperately craved. Haley was a voice of reason, but also one of the only characters willing to follow their heart just as much as their head.

Brooke Davis: "I Am Who I Am. No Excuses."

She might be one of the series' most recognized characters, but unpopular opinions about Brooke Davis's character have shown that her character has started to age poorly. As a teen, Brooke was seldom more than the typical high school mean girl, and she rarely faced any consequences for her cruelty.

In her adult years, she thankfully matured and became a better person, thriving as a successful designer and finding love with a man who actually put her first. But whether a teenager or an adult, Brooke always remained true to herself, and never made excuses or tried to compromise who she wanted to be for anyone else.

Lucas Scott: "Your Art Matters. It's What Got Me Here."

Lucas Scott was always a moody character. He drew most of his inspiration and guidance for life from various forms of art, especially books. But one of his greatest inspirations came from Peyton Sawyer's art, and eventually, her heart, too.

As an outcast in the social world of Tree Hill, Lucas made many mistakes in his younger years. But as he grew older and wiser, he continually came back to the art that grounded him and made his successes possible, eventually becoming an author and a loving husband to Peyton, whose art started it all.

Peyton Sawyer: "I Guess I'm Just A Riddle Wrapped In A Mystery Inside A Bitch."

Peyton Sawyer was always polarizing among fans. Some related to her deeply sensitive and artsy personality, while others found her heavy storylines overwhelming for a teenage drama. But she never shied away from embracing the many contradictions and feelings that made up her character's journey.

Peyton never cared about being popular or successful. She only ever prioritized her love of her art, her music, her family, and her friends. If she had a bit of a sarcastic edge to her at times, after all that she endured, it was more than justified. By the time she left the series, Peyton's edges had softened and she was so much more than a moody teenager.
