The upcoming turn-based RPG One Piece Odyssey is nearing its release, and while it will be a great introduction to One Piece's story, it will also allow players to take control of more characters than the series' protagonist, Monkey D. Luffy. Unlike the franchise's past action games, One Piece World Seeker and the Pirate Warriors series, Odyssey's combat takes a different approach with turn-based battles, similar to Dragon Quest and classic Pokémon titles. This shift should allow players to see more of Odyssey's stunning visuals without worrying about camera movements.

The story of One Piece Odyssey joins Luffy and his crew of personable pirates as they crash-land on a mysterious island. Unfortunately, the newest Straw Hat crew member, Jimbei, might not be playable in Odyssey because the game was in development before the helmsman officially joined the crew. However, after meeting the game's original characters, Adio and Lim, an unfortunate misunderstanding sees the cast lose their abilities. The Straw Hat Pirates must revisit memories from past adventures to get them back. Newer crewmates will be able to experience and give insight into the events and battles they were not there to witness in the original story.

Key One Piece Characters Like Ace & Sabo May Help In Odyssey's Battles

A new trailer for Odyssey, from Bandai Namco on YouTube, has revealed that some of the series' most prominent arcs, Marineford and Dressrosa, will be playable sections of the game. However, the trailers may be teasing more playable One Piece Odyssey characters than have been confirmed so far. Both newly announced arcs featured in Odyssey introduced numerous powerful enemies to the long-running series. Each arc also included many allies helping Luffy in his battles, and the latest trailer teases characters like Ace, Jimbei, Crocodile, Sabo, and Trafalgar Law as playable teammates.

New & Returning One Piece Characters Make Odyssey A Unique Experience

New One Piece character Adio is seen holding two pistols across their chest with an enemy exploding behind them, seen above his silver hair.

Developers of One Piece Odyssey are setting out to create a game that revisits One Piece's most prominent arcs in a way that new fans can experience for the first time. Thanks to certain story elements playing out differently than Eiichiro Oda's original story, fans who have watched or read the series will still be left guessing how it all plays out once One Piece Odyssey releases on January 13, 2023. Moments like Luffy taking on the Navy's strongest Admirals may go differently with the assistance of the now-present Straw Hat Crew in the mission to save their Captain's brother.

The new characters who welcomed Luffy and his crew to the game's mysterious island, Adio and Lim, will undoubtedly play a large part in the game's overall story and may also help players in battle. However, like many JRPGs with engaging storylines, plot twists will make One Piece Odyssey's story evolve in unexpected ways. Players will be able to learn more about the game's plot and every character that will help them complete the game when it releases on January 13.
