One Of Us Is Lying, the Peacock show based on the hit young adult thriller by Karen M. McManus, recently finished its first season. Fans of either the show, the book, or both have been divided about several aspects of the television adaptation, and have started discussion boards on Reddit to share their thoughts.

While the reception of One Of Us Is Lying was mostly good, some viewers have spoken up about their unpopular opinions in regards to plot, changes from the book, casting, and much more.

Bronwyn's Casting Works

While watching the show, some people held the unpopular opinion that the show made no casting mistakes. Redditor Mrsstiles commented, "I think the casting is excellent" and pointed out that the only one who didn't look how they expected was Nate. But, the majority of fans disagree.

Bronwyn may have been the most intelligent One Of Us Is Lying character, but many viewers thought that she looked more like a teacher than a student. SIsForSad voiced their opinion in a Reddit thread, saying "the actress looks like a college professor." Even Forbes weighed in, saying her casting fed into the typical teen drama trend of high schoolers looking like 30-year-old adults.

Maeve's Love Triangle Was Interesting

It can be controversial to like a show's departure from the source material, and that's exactly how Redditor Pirogo3th feels. They showed their approval for the plot change, saying, "The Maeve and Janae ship is interesting." An added bonus to this change was that it intertwined Maeve more into the core character group, which will set her up for her larger role in the sequel.

However, Maeve, Simon, and Janae never had a love triangle in the original story, and many viewers of the show think it should have stayed that way. Reddit user SIsForSad chimed in on this opinion, as well, saying "Why did they make Maeve in love with Simon and Janae in love with Maeve? She clearly did not like Simon nor were they friends in the books." Unique_Couple_2753 agreed, saying, "her and Simon and Janae was so out of nowhere."

Addy Wasn't Likable

Icy-Junket5727 shared their contrary opinion on the subject, saying, "I don't like Addy's character as much. They made her worse compared to the books." One user, Aggravating_West_202, seconded that opinion, and wrote, "I agree she was more likable in the books. It's probably because we can hear what they are thinking and feeling." It's a valid point, considering that books allow for inner monologues that move character development along much better than a TV show can.

But Addy, the cheerleader-turned-murder-suspect, was a major player in the story. She drives much of the plot forward and comes up with several plans to try to find the real killer. She is a fan-favorite character, and fans additionally thought she had a great sense of humor, with Redditor Skipmuffin sharing, "Is it just me, or was the oxymoron joke by Addy actually funny??"

Cooper's Secret Should Have Been Different

FultzRevolt on Reddit complained, "I'm so done with the closeted gay athlete trope." Icedcoffeeblues had the same opinion, adding, "As someone who's gay themselves, I really wish they'd stop making closeted gay athletes a story. Can we just stop having being gay be a big deal? I wish his secret was something better."

The gay athlete who feels pressure to hide his sexuality from his peers and parents is a very common trope in teen dramas, but it's done intentionally in One of Us Is Lying. Simon's thesis about the school and the popular students was that they were clichés. But, in a more real sense, it may be more accurate than some viewers realize. In one study by Pew Research, only 39 percent of LGBTQ+ participants had told their fathers about their sexuality, and they also believed, as an institution, sports leagues to be one of the least LGBTQ+ friendly organizations, so rather than a cliched trope, this is a real issue for many young people today.

It's A Gossip Girl Copycat

Sistersisteeeeeer went to Reddit to call One Of Us Is Lying a "very second-rate gossip girl" and said it was "dumb trash." In a different post, user nightowlprincess said that they felt the series is "a slight rip-off of The Breakfast Club and Gossip Girl."

The similarities between Gossip Girl's blog and the "About That" website are definitely strong: both gossip sites aren't afraid to ruin lives and seem to know everything minutes after it happens. But, many people think One Of Us Is Lying has grit and edge that's missing from GG, and Pure Wow makes the case that the show is even better than GG or its reboot because it does more justice to its source material.

The New Ending Didn't Work

Some people have been very honest about their distaste for this new ending, pointing out that it didn't make sense. Redditor Excelsenor wrote, "I found myself getting annoyed at the finale. How would Jake be missing for 2 weeks and it just getting written off as him going on vacation?" Some teen TV show characters are flawed but loved, but Excelsenor notes that "They went from alright kids with secrets to straight-up criminals."

A lot of viewers saw these changes as necessary for a more exciting TV adaptation and as an opening for an additional season. Many other fans outside Reddit, like jelenakandic-21366 on IMDb, liked the changes, saying, "The changes even made it fun for those of us who read the books because it stayed suspenseful until the very end."

Marianly Tejada's American Accent Wasn't Consistent

Marianly Tejada, who plays Bronwyn on the television show, is originally from the Dominican Republic and doesn't naturally have Bronwyn's American accent on the show. One Redditor noted that "Bronwyn's accent became less and less American each episode," and another, sm007930, commented, "I came to Reddit to see if anyone else noticed Bronwyn's accent coming through!"

But many other people who watched the show hardly noticed a difference and had no idea that her accent was c at all. In fact, approval of her American accent is so widespread that IHeartRadio did a segment to talk about how Tejada mastered it for the show.

Nate Didn't Look Quite Right

Some fans were disappointed in the casting decision for Nate, saying that they pictured him looking much different when reading the book. Specifically, his hair color is a controversial point, with Redditor Lunas-monet saying, "I thought his hair would be darker." Another Reddit user, bthubbin, elaborated, writing, "Nate isn't what I expected! I imagined more of a young smirking s***head with a good heart."

But for a majority of fans, Nate is a favorite among the Murder Club characters and they love his good-girl-bad-boy TV relationship with Bronwyn. Cooper van Grootel has received a lot of praise for his role on the show, and book readers were thrilled to see one of their favorite characters brought to life, some even making fan edits of the actor on TikTok. So it seems that even if he doesn't look like how he does in the book, fans love him nonetheless.

Addy's Wig Was Bad

Addy's wig ruined the suspended disbelief of the show for a select group of viewers. One Redditor, kajes1, conveyed their dislike simply by writing, "Addy's wig is just..." On a separate board, another Redditor piped up, saying, "That haircut didn't suit the actress who played Addy at all. It gave her a super square shape."

It's hard to say what happened here, but sometimes there are financial restraints on the things that production teams can spend money on, and a few low-budget movies are even some of the best of all time. Furthermore, hair changes can be difficult when the actor understandably doesn't want to permanently alter their appearance for a role, and most fans would agree that her hair wasn't that bad!

Simon Wasn't Enough Of A Jerk

split image of Simon and the Murder Club in One Of Us Is Lying

Some book fans, like Redditor shebringsthesun, think that the characters didn't acknowledge how much of a jerk Simon was and that the show glorified his character. They wrote, "I wish collectively they would all just say 'you know what, we SHOULD have killed Simon.' Dude is a POS."

For the show to have a more active villain that the main characters could confront, and to keep book readers on their toes, Simon had to become a sort of victim himself. If he was truly as hateful and problematic as in the books, Jake would have been a less compelling counterpart to the Murder Club.
