In the trailer for Regina King’s upcoming drama One Night in Miami, four Black legends come together to celebrate. King, an Emmy winning actress known for her starring role in HBO’s Watchmen, has previously helmed episodes of shows such as Scandal, This Is Us, and Insecure. Based on the stage play of the same name by Kemp Powers, One Night in Miami marks King’s debut as a feature film director.

Kemp penned the script for One Night in Miami, which focuses on a fictionalized meeting of four iconic individuals. The trailer, from Amazon Prime Video, offers audiences an extended look at the actors as the legendary historical figures at the center of the drama: Kingsley Ben-Adir plays Malcolm X, Eli Goree has the role of Muhammad Ali. Aldis Hodge portrays the illustrious NFL player Jim Brown, and Leslie Odom Jr. is the influential singer and composer Sam Cooke. You can check out the trailer, along with a poster, below.

Set for a limited theatrical release on December 25, before arriving to Prime Video on January 15, One Night in Miami premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September. The drama also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it was the runner-up for the People’s Choice Award. It has received glowing reviews from critics, specifically for King’s direction and Kemp’s writing, in addition to the performances by the cast, making it a contender for several awards.

The synopsis for One Night in Miami… reads as follows: On the night of Feb. 25, 1964, in Miami, Cassius Clay (soon to be Muhammad Ali) joins Jim Brown, Sam Cooke and Malcom X, and they discuss the responsibility of being successful Black men during the civil rights movement.
