Bad news for Storybrooke fans: Once Upon A Time has been officially cancelled. Since it first began in 2011, Once Upon A Time has become known for serving up a whole new kind of fairy tale, revisiting the classics (like Snow White), bringing in beloved Disney characters (like the gang from Frozen), and adding a few new stories created just for the show. Fans have loved this beautiful fantasy series that spans multiple worlds, but signs have been pointing to the end for a little while now.

A majority of the core cast left Once Upon A Time after season 6, and the season finale last year certainly felt like an ending for the main storyline. While a seventh season was still in the cards without them (and the cast talked about being "excited" for the new feel of Once), ABC moved the show from a prime Sunday slot to Friday nights. Unsurprisingly, this led to a decline in ratings. Now, the show will be wrapping up at the end of the current season.

In an interview with Variety, co-creators/executive producers Eddy Kitsis and Adam Horowitz talked about the show's cancellation, revealing that the possibility of an end after season 7 was always on the cards, and they had written two possible endings - one to wrap things up completely. Although they are sad to say goodbye to the series, the two also seem content with how long Once Upon A Time ran, and the stories that they told in these seven seasons.

It’s kind of like when someone lives to 108. You’re sad they’re gone, but it was a good run. And that’s I think what Once was, which is we never thought we’d get this far. We’ve had a great run and we really can’t complain about anything because we got to do everything we ever set out to do — twice.

The Entertainment President of ABC, Channing Dungey, also released a statement about the show's cancellation, despite previously having expressed cautious optimism about an eighth season of Once"

Saying goodbye will be bittersweet, but Once Upon a Time will forever be part of the ABC legacy, and we can’t wait for fans to join us in this epic final chapter.

How that final chapter will wrap up is anyone's guess, although the EPs did say that they didn't want to create a repeat of the season 6 finale, and are creating something "hopeful" to wrap up Once Upon A Time for good. While there's no doubt that many fans will be disappointed to see the series come to an end, for others, it's definitely time to say goodbye.
