News has been slim regarding the superhero sequel, but now The Old Guard 2 has received a positive update for the first time in months. According to series star Matthias Schoenaerts, The Old Guard 2 was shot "approximately a year and a half ago, and I think they’re hitting the last stage of post-production." The films are no doubt visual effect-heavy extravaganzas, but that doesn't explain what's been taking the film so long.

Schoenaerts offered more hints about the movie's unusual delay when saying "As far as I've understood, I think there's been a switch at Netflix high up." Though the information isn't confirmed by Netflix, Schoenaerts posits that the film was shuffled around due to a changing of the guard at the streamer. Regardless, it's clear the comic book sequel is moving in the right direction after nearly four years.

The Old Guard ends with Merrick being defeated, and Andy becoming mortal. After being set-up by Booker, Andromache of Scythia is less than pleased and banishes her friend from the team for a full century. Enter Copley, who is recruited to help The Old Guard operate quietly. Over the years, members of the team have been seen in photos, so they'll need to find new ways to stay under-the-radar. Six months after Booker and his colleagues part ways, Quynh — the first immortal that Andy found — re-emerges in a Paris apartment after being trapped underwater, in a coffin, for 500 years.

Ngo will be key to The Old Guard 2's storyline, and it is expected that Andy and Quynh will have a complicated relationship upon reuniting. Based on the final moments of The Old Guard, it seems like Quynh could be the sequel's primary villain, if only because of her menacing demeanor. It was also revealed that the ending of The Old Guard 2 will set up a trilogy, meaning whatever happens in the sequel won't be the end of the story.
