Who wins a fight between Andy and Quynh in The Old Guard 2? Netflix hasn't officially announced a sequel to Gina Prince-Bythewood's 2020 film, but a follow up seems inevitable due to high streaming numbers and positive reviews. Based on the eponymous comic series by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández, The Old Guard released in July 2020 and proved to be a big hit.

The Old Guard stars Charlize Theron as Andromache of Scythia, a centuries-old warrior who uses the name "Andy" as a cover in modern culture. The storyline centers on her team's discovery and mentorship of an undead U.S. Marine named Nile Freeman (KiKi Layne), who learns the very important lesson that she and her new comrades are technically not immortal, as they can indeed lose their powers. Even so, the primary Old Guard team has lived for hundreds upon hundreds of years, and reflects about the first immortal that Andy found, Quynh (Veronica Ngo), who now haunts Nile's dreams. In a flashback sequence, it's revealed that Andy and Quynh fought thousands of battles together. Because they wouldn't die, however, Englishmen presumed them to be witches. Quynh was placed in an Iron Maiden device and dropped to the bottom of the ocean. The Old Guard on Netflix ends with Quynh showing up in Parisian apartment, and thus teasing the inevitable sequel.

When predicting the outcome of an Andy-Quynh showdown in The Old Guard 2, the first thing to consider is the existing source material. The Old Guard: Force Multiplied #1 released in December 2019, and four subsequent issues have been published since. In the comic, however, Quynh is actually Noriko. The Netflix character was reportedly renamed because Ngo, a Vietnamese actress, wanted her character to match her ethnicity. And so there's reason to believe that Quynh's character arc will stray from Noriko's story in The Old Guard: Force Multiplied. The characters are violently removed from Andy's life in both the comic and film adaptation, with Noriko being pushed overboard from a boat and Quynh being pushed over in an Iron Maiden device. Because the Netflix narrative is much more disturbing, the implication for The Old Guard 2 is that Quynh will be unpredictable and perhaps a bit rusty (for obvious reasons). The comics reveal that Norika returns with a vendetta against humanity.

Veronica Ngo as Quynh in The Old Guard on Netflix

Based on the Netflix franchise, and ignoring any context from the comics, Quynh will seemingly have the upper hand in The Old Guard 2. Andy lost her immortality after being stabbed in the original movie, however the screenwriter, Rucka, is reportedly less interested in technicalities and more invested in how the concept of life and death emotionally affect the characters. Assuming that Quynh will the be the central villain in The Old Guard 2, she'll presumably be ready to put everything on the line when confronting Andy and company. If Rucka ends up staying true to the comic narrative, Quynh may not choose to physically engage with Andy because she's still emotionally invested in their relationship. In that case, it's the rest of The Old Guard squad - Nile, Joe (Marwan Kenzari), Nicky (Luca Marinelli), and even Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) - who will need to keep an eye out for Quynh (most likely in their dreams).

In The Old Guard: Force Multiplied #5, Andy makes a fateful decision after being shamed for her behavior in the past. Due to conflict with Nile and the rest of the team, Andy decides not to battle Noriko, but to join her instead. Whether or not this mythology translates to The Old Guard 2 remains to be seen. If the movie franchise turns out to be a trilogy, however, an Andy-Quynh reunion would be a strong set-up for a final installment.
