Official Poster for 'Centurion'

Michael Fassbender in Centurian poster

Back in February we got a look at the international trailer for Centurion, a film about the Ninth Legion of the Roman Empire that mysteriously vanished on its journey to Caledonia. With an August release right around the corner, IGN has unveiled the new official poster.

Centurion is written and directed by Neil Marshall (The Descent, Doomsday) and stars Michael Fassbender (who’s been in the news the past few days due to his potential involvement in X-Men: First Class or the Spider-Man reboot), Dominic West (The Wire), and Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace).

Here’s the synopsis from

"CENTURION is set during the war between Roman soldiers and Pict tribesmen during the 2nd century Roman conquest of Britain. Michael Fassbender stars as Quintus Dias, Roman centurion and son of a legendary gladiator who leads a group of soldiers on a raid of a Pict camp to rescue a captured general (Dominic West). The son of the Pict leader is murdered during the raid, and the Romans find themselves hunted by a seemingly unstoppable group of the Pict's most vicious and skilled warriors, led by a beautiful and deadly tracker (Olga Kurylenko), and hell bent on revenge."

The premise sounds interesting and the poster definitely plays up the aggressively violent tone of the trailer. It looks just a little too Photoshopped for my tastes but that seems to be the trend these days. The image is definitely striking though and I like the tagline quite a bit.  If they’re aiming to grab the attention of 300 and Gladiator fans then this is a pretty good start. I’m still not sure why the one guy’s head is swinging around surrounded by blood because it looks like the dude with the sword hasn’t even swung yet. But I digress.

I'm also a big fan of Neil Marshall and thought The Descent was so well done that I'll watch anything this guy does. Unfortunately, that devotion cost me a ticket to Doomsday, but you can't win 'em all. Hopefully he bounces back with this one.

Centurion will receive a limited theatrical release starting August 27th. You can also see it early through Video On Demand beginning August 23rd.

What do you guys think of this Centurion poster? Are you excited to check out the film?
