Robert California was quite the personality to board onto the late-goings of The Office. The show found trouble establishing itself post-Michael Scott, but Robert California's stark, specific personality gave it the lift it needed, starting with his interview for manager, when he stares directly into the camera, acknowledging its existence.

He was a man of passion, and sometimes that passion led him to some pretty questionable positions, but as with any good character, Michael Scott included, it's the depth of character that makes them special. Sure, Michael Scott was a bit dumb, but he was also incredibly kind and a great, capable salesman.

For Robert California, he came off as a bad guy sometimes. Other times, he was actually a fantastic person. Here are the five times he was actually a great guy, as well as five times he was the worst.

Best: Taking Erin Home

When Andy and Erin were in their on-again, off-again romance, with Jessica still in Andy's life, there was one particular Christmas party when Erin decided to bury her sadness in booze. Robert indulged this and he later approached her and took a walk with her. He then offered to take her home.

Tailing him, Andy overhears what Robert is saying to her outside of her home. Robert admits that he has just left his wife and is in a bad place too, but tells Erin to take some medicine and sleep in in the morning, then hugs her and leaves it at that.

All the while, Andy thought that Robert, in his snazzy tracksuit and jacket, had other intentions, but it turned out Robert was just a good guy.

Worst: Drunkenly Shutting Down Binghamton

Robert California from The Office

There is a lot of talk of branches closing down throughout the course of the office, but whether it was Jan or David doing the closing down, it was always justified by poor performance. Then Michael and Holly did their comedy routine announcing that Buffalo was being shut down and surely it couldn't get any worse than that.

It could, though.

In his downward spiral of substance abuse, Robert California realizes that in his drunken stupor, he has shut down the Dunder Mifflin Binghamton branch. Meaning that handfuls of employees lost their jobs, all because Robert decided to get a little toasted.

Not a good look.

Best: Fear

Maybe it's that the best of Robert California comes out at parties, but in addition to his safeguarding of Erin at a Christmas party, Robert's behavior at the Halloween party is also upstanding, though the episode leaves it until the end to show why.

Throughout the episode, Robert witnesses everyone's fears. He sees how Jim and Pam are arguing about ghosts, how Kelly is worried she will always be alone, so on and so forth. At the end of the episode, Robert tells a scary story—and a bizarre one at that—but at the end, after having thoroughly frightened everyone in the office, the employees of Dunder Mifflin come together and forget their petty squabbles.

Worst: Winners vs Losers

Robert California from The Office

Very early on in Robert California's tenure, Erin discovers Robert's notebook, with a two-sided list dividing everyone in the office. After a fruitless investigation, Robert invites everyone on the right side of the list out to lunch and, at lunch, admits that he saw this bunch as the winners, while the bunch left to Andy's "pizza party" back at the office were losers.

While he quickly realizes he shouldn't have said that, Kevin wastes no time in texting everyone in the loser group, "Suck it, losers."

Best: Winners vs Losers Cont.

It didn't stop there though. What might have been a terrible, awkward situation turned into a learning opportunity where Robert set himself up for one of his textbook speeches. In this speech, he spoke to both sides of the list, admitting how it is silly that they put so much stock in this list, as he didn't even know them.

He talked about positive and negative reinforcement and told the winners to prove him right and the losers to prove him wrong. All in all, it was an excellent recovery and showed that he did actually care about these people, even if he did have a strange way of showing it.

Worst: The Wild Dwight Chase

Dwight Shrute in The Office

Dwight Shrute wants power. He has always wanted power. But he also wants the right kind of power. So when a management position opens up in Tallahassee, Robert California grants Dwight an interview... only he has no intention of actually giving him that interview.

Instead, he gives Dwight a run-around involving wrestling with Stu, Oreos, hurting poor Gabe, and medals from World War II. In the end, he finally has to admit that Dwight isn't right for the job, but all of this could have been much better handled if he'd just been upfront with Dwight the whole time.

Best: Pool Party

Perhaps the CEO taking off his pants and skinny dipping isn't exactly a "good guy" move, but the build-up to it was. After spending the day moaning about having to sell his house, he finally consents to have a get-together (don't call it a party). His reluctance is palpable.

Throughout the course of the party, as he continues to drink from his wine stores, Robert continues to moan about what might have been. Then, when he reaches the pool yard and sees how much fun everything is, he celebrates how wonderful it is that they have all come together as friends to enjoy a night.

And then he takes off his pants. No comment.

Worst: Literally Everything Nellie

Robert California had his bugaboos, but none were more poignant than his relationship with Nellie Bertram who was, in and of herself, a rather questionable character. First, it started with him letting the Sabre retail idea get all the way to the end before firing everyone, including Nellie.

Then, when Nellie shows up in Scranton and takes over Andy's job, Robert barely tries to stop her. He then goes even further, leaving her a voicemail that, while we never hear, we can certainly imagine well enough.

Every single interaction Robert had with Nellie was nothing short of terrible. Even when he gave her the job, which slighted Andy in a big way.

Best: The Garden Party

As with many Robert California moments, it's often a bit of his bad side mixed in with his good. This is another such case. When Robert continued to get toasted, much to Andy's chagrin, Robert decides to say a few words.

Robert does not say what Andy wants him to say. He doesn't praise Andy but rather redirects all the praise to the employees and all their hard work. It was a charming moment that often gets lost because of Andy's frustration. Also, the basil plant he brought was pretty nice. No one else brought gifts.

Worst: Andy and the Missus

Robert California and Ms in the Office

Robert and Andy had a long, tumultuous relationship that got really awkward sometimes (knockity knock, don't knock back, for instance). But nothing was worse than when Robert California's soon-to-be ex-wife comes in hoping to land a job at her husband's office.

Robert gives Andy incredibly confusing instructions to not give her a job under any circumstances but proceeds to push him to give her a job. Baffled, Andy thoroughly fails this impossible task. But the fault is not on him, it was completely on Robert.
