Jan Levinson is one of the most chaotic characters in The Office. She originally starts off as Michael's straight-edge boss who simply cannot tolerate his workplace antics. She easily gets annoyed at him and seems to almost fire him on several occasions. However, despite all of this, Michael manages to make her fall for him. The two start having a work affair that slowly builds into an actual relationship when she officially moves in with him after being fired from Dunder Mifflin.
This is when Jan starts to really lose it. She becomes addicted to candle making and goes a bit crazy while living and dating Michael. She ends up having a baby after they break up all on her own and continues on in the series as Michael's ex-girlfriend who is just always a little nuts. She guest stars in almost every season all the way to season nine.
Used A Donor For Astrid
Though Jan didn't want to have children while she was dating Michael, however, it is discovered that she just didn't really want to have Michael's child. Jan used a donor to artificially inseminate herself in order to have a baby. Michael, of course, thinks the baby is his when he finds out that she is pregnant. In the episode "Baby Shower," in season five, there is an outtake scene between Jan and Kevin where they realize Kevin has donated sperm to the same bank that Jan used, meaning there is a slim possibility that Kevin is actually Astrid's father.
Rough Childhood
In a deleted scene of "Dinner Party," it is implied that Jan grew up in West Virginia with her family. On her "Serenity by Jan" website, there is a segment that describes her youth and just how difficult it was. She had an extremely unhappy childhood and ended up running away from home. This theme of her being estranged from her family seems to be a continuation from earlier episodes when she comments on how distant she is from them.
Actually Likes Michael
Through Jan's horrible antics, she also shows that part of her deeply cares about Michael, she just can't quite seem to handle him properly. He does make her laugh and she often recognizes he has a good heart. Many think Jan abuses Michael's good nature by making him do everything she wants. And while she probably does do this really often, it seems more like Jan does this unintentionally and not with the intent to actually hurt him.
In season four, Michael and Jan are dating. In "Money," Michael realizes how bad his credit is and tries to run away but Jan stops him. She confides in him that he was the only one there for her when she got fired from Dunder Mifflin, and so she will be there for him because he was worth standing by.
Her Candles Were In A Vigil
In "Weight Loss," Jan comes to visit the office to print out some free copies promoting her candles. Kevin sees her and asks how her business is going and she explains that its been going great, her candles were even used in the vigil of a girl who went missing and had been assumed to be dead. Jan is incredibly excited by this and a little insensitive to the missing person case, but Kevin then tells her that the girl was, thankfully, found to which Jan had no idea.
Family Doesn't Speak To Her
Jan mentions that her family doesn't speak to her anymore, she says that they "still won't speak to me on the advice on counsel" while stating that Michael is the only one who stuck by her. Now, "advice on counsel" begs a lot of questions. Was this related to her big blow up in New York, since she states this right after, or was this strain caused before? Jan states she didn't have anyone and that her friends were all expecting it to happen. Based on how it was worded, it made it seem like she and her family had some pretty big legal issues at some point or another.
Incredibly Vain
If it weren't already clear, Jan is incredibly vain about pretty much everything she does. She thinks of herself incredibly highly and always imagines herself to be the best in everyone's' eyes. She thinks she makes the best candles and that they can help everyone, she believes her music and singing are the best and likes to (obnoxiously and uncomfortably) show off her talents. Jan actually takes up singing a ton when Astrid is born, pretending like she is singing for her baby while she is really just trying to show off in front of those around her.
Has A Thing For Younger Men
One of the biggest jokes amongst Office fans is about the revelation in "Dinner Party" that Jan had probably taken the virginity of her old assistant, Hunter. Hunter was in the first few seasons of The Office but had been fired once Ryan took over Jan's position in season 4.
Hunter went on to make music and wrote a song with lyrics that definitely raised some eyebrows, a song that Jan seemed to admire deeply and listened to whenever she was stressed about Michael, almost as if she was reminiscing about another time. Later in the show, Jan also sets her sights on Clark and takes him to become her lover while in Europe.
Sees a Psychiatrist
In one of the first episodes that fans get to see a different side of Jan rather than just her business life, they learn that she has been seeing a psychiatrist due to her pretty awful divorce. Jan was married for the beginning of the series as Jan Levinson-Gould but dropped the latter half, much to Michael's surprise. She also shared with him that she was also a victim of identity theft, which was another reason she was seeking help.
Executive Of White Pages
In season nine it is revealed that Jan has gone on from her days of selling candles and working at a hospital to be an executive in Scranton for the White Pages. Dwight and Pam try to get her to make a deal with Dunder Mifflin to which she agrees to after Dwight offers her a reduced price on the material. Jan later cancels her deal with Dunder Mifflin when Andy comes back from his random trip to try to get her to pay the normal amount. It is not until Dwight is the Regional Manager that she decides to do business with them again.
Takes Up The Entire Bed
A lot of things are revealed about Jan and Michael's relationship in the season four episode, "Dinner Party." Jan takes up two of Michael's rooms, one for her workspace and one for her office, and it is also revealed that due to Jan's "space issues" she also takes up the entire queen or king-sized bed in Michael and Jan's bedroom, leaving Michael to only sleep on a tiny little bench. The bench sits at the foot of the bed and Jim and Pam comment on how small it is, but Michael proves that it fits him perfectly (albeit uncomfortably).
