As a sequel to the original game released in 2018, Octopath Traveler 2 follows the same core concept, with eight new main characters comprising the player's party, each with their own unique classes, stories, and ways of interacting with the world. Set to release on February 24, the game promises a significant upgrade to the Octopath Traveler experience, with a new setting, additional battle mechanics, and a greater amount of party interaction than the original game.

Like its predecessor, Octopath Traveler 2 has eight main characters, one of which is chosen by the player as their main protagonist, with the other seven being recruitable as the player progresses through the game. Expanding on the first game, however, the sequel seems set to offer a few new takes on the systems of Octopath, with a day/night cycle for its new setting of Solistia, multiple Path Actions for each character depending on the time of day, and the addition of the Latent Power system to battles, which allows for the usage of special moves after building up a meter. The main draw of the game for many players, however, will undoubtedly be the new characters.

Octopath Traveler's Base Classes Carry Over To The Sequel

As laid out by developer and publisher Square Enix, the main characters of Octopath Traveler 2 - Hikari, Agnea, Partitio, Osvald, Throné, Temenos, Ochette, and Castti - each have the same base classes as the original eight Octopath characters. While the similarities have led to Octopath Traveler 2 theories about the original's heroes' descendants, it also means that, aside from any secret jobs that have yet to be unveiled, players will be working with familiar setups for much of the early game. Additionally, as with the first game, each character will be able to choose a secondary class, with obtainable licenses spread throughout the world for the purpose of allowing for multiclassing.

Octopath Traveler 2's Secret Jobs Are Unknown - For Now

Although promotional material for the game has mentioned the possibility of discovering new jobs or classes from following each character's quests, none outside the eight base classes have yet been revealed - although it's at least a safe bet to assume that Octopath Traveler 2 will either match or exceed Octopath Traveler's four secret classes, like the Starseer. Meanwhile, the characters themselves each take a distinctly different approach from their predecessors, with, for example, Agnea the Dancer's story seeming somewhat lighter than Primrose's from the first game, and Hikari the Warrior's samurai theme contrasting Olberic's more knight-oriented look and storyline.

Every new Octopath Traveler 2 main character and their starting class is as follows:

Character

Starting Class

Agnea

Dancer

Castti

Apothecary

Hikari

Warrior

Ochette

Hunter

Osvald

Scholar

Partitio

Merchant

Temenos

Cleric

Throné

Thief

As the game quickly approaches release, it's likely that any additional or secret classes will have to be discovered in-game, alongside the intertwining storylines of each main character. However, although Octopath Traveler 2 is looking to expand and improve upon the original game in a multitude of ways, it remains to be seen just how its characters and classes will match up to those of Octopath Traveler.
