Octopath Traveler 2’s duration has been revealed, right on time for the JRPG’s release on February 24. Square Enix’s sequel will be a lengthy one, both for players who exclusively follow through with the campaign, and those who partake in optional content. As suggested by the game’s title, Octopath Traveler 2 follows the intertwining journey of eight different adventurers toward one single goal.

Like the first game in the series, the new title’s characters have different classes, composing the classic JRPG tropes. This all happens while making good use of Square Enix’s stunning 2D-HD visual art style. Octopath Traveler 2’s new characters all have their own stories and motivations, but a threat to the realm makes them unite - and given Octopath Traveler 2’s estimated duration, players will be involved with these characters for a lot of time.

As posted by industry specialist Stealth40k on Twitter, the game’s producer, Masashi Takashi, revealed how long it takes to beat Octopath Traveler 2 during an interview with Famitsu. According to them, most playthroughs will last an average of around 70 hours. They do mention, however, that completionists - that is, those who complete all the additional content - will likely invest over 100 hours in the game. These time estimates may vary once the game releases and players finally dig through Octopath Traveler 2's tactical RPG content.

Octopath Traveler 2 Is As Long As The First Game

The time it takes to beat Octopath Traveler 2 seems to be something of an evolution to the original game’s duration. According to HowLongToBeat, a website specialized in registering average playtimes, the first Octopath Traveler requires over 60 hours of gameplay for only the main story to be concluded. If players want to finish every one of Octopath Traveler’s side quests and secondary objectives, the recorded average is 103 hours of playtime.

If Octopath Traveler 2’s duration is actually longer than the original game’s playtime, players of the 2023 JRPG will have their hands full for a long time. Of course, long campaigns and even longer 100% completions can be both good and bad. For those who endure them well without getting tired of a certain repetitiveness and need an excuse to justify a AAA game’s price, this is excellent news. However, players who prefer more condensed and straightforward stories may have a harder time enjoying all of Octopath Traveler 2.

Nonetheless, this is one of the most anticipated games of the year, and fans of the original should have no problem with the time it takes to beat Octopath Traveler 2. In fact, even those who did not attune with the first game may enjoy the sequel, since Octopath Traveler 2 promises features missing from the original title. The characters in the new game will have more interconnected stories than previously, catering to those who wished to see this feature improved with Octopath Traveler 2.
