A new Ocean's 8 trailer has arrived. The spinoff of the highly-popular Ocean's franchise - starring George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, and Don Cheadle, among other big names - arrives in two months as part of the packed summer 2018 blockbuster season. Directed by Gary Ross, the film introduces Danny Ocean’s (Clooney) estranged sister Debbie (Sandra Bullock) as she plans an elaborate "job" that involves the upcoming Met Gala.
Similar to its parent franchise, Ocean's 8 features a slew of high profile stars. Joining Bullock in the film are Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter, Awkwafina, and Sarah Paulson - all of whom have a significant role to play in carrying out said "job", which involves Anne Hathaway and a very expensive piece of jewelry. The film will include several direct connections to Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's trilogy too, with Damon and Carl Reiner potentially reprising their roles as Linus Caldwell and Saul Bloom.

Clocking in at two minutes, the trailer offers additional looks at Miss Ocean and her team as they put their Met Gala plan into the motion. It's become more apparent as well that the job is more than a straightforward heist about money. It turns out that Debbie has an ulterior motive for choosing to pull their act during the fashion industry's most star-studded night. Chances are that her motivation stems from her former lover's betrayal of her leading her to spend several years behind bars.
Unfortunately, although the trailer was fun, it would've been better if it leaned a bit more on showcasing the team's camaraderie. The main draw of Soderbergh's trilogy didn't just come from the star power the movies had, but more so from the interaction between the members of the team as they plan their heist. While there is no doubt that Bullock, Blanchett and everyone else can pull the same interesting character dynamic, that kind of fun rapport among Debbie's squad hasn't really been established yet.
For quite some time, Ocean's 8 was presumed to be a reboot of the Clooney, et al's version similar to what Sony Pictures did with Ghostbusters - an idea that was initially met with divisive reception. While the flick isn't meant to be anything more than a seemingly great popcorn film that people can enjoy at the cinemas, it's technically the first time that this many A-list actresses are banding together on a single big screen project. And given that all of the members specialize in some skill integral to the heist, the flick is a great and fun way to push the female empowerment cause in Hollywood without being too right on the nose.
