The upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ TV series could finally answer a seven-year-old mystery from Star Wars Rebels. Excitement is building for the Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney+, which will feature the return of both Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen as Obi-Wan and Darth Vader. Lucasfilm has promised another duel between the former master and apprentice, and it could solve a seven-year-old canon mystery.

Up until now, Lucasfilm's live-action Disney+ TV shows have focused either on brand new characters such as Din Djarin or side-characters like Boba Fett. Now it's moving to two of the stars of the franchise, offering a grudge match fans have previously only dreamed of. The story is important for another reason, though, because it's a glimpse into a time period that has seldom been explored in the canon; Obi-Wan Kenobi is set ten years into the Dark Times of the Emperor's reign, and - as confirmed by the first poster - it will begin with Obi-Wan's exile to Tatooine. It's unlikely to stay on Tatooine, though, simply because it's important to the canon that Darth Vader doesn't set foot on the desert sands until after Luke Skywalker has left. Concept art has even teased a return to Mustafar, the planet where Obi-Wan left Anakin Skywalker for dead; Rogue One: A Star Wars Story revealed this became Darth Vader's home, and tie-in comics have since explored why he chose to live on the barren lava planet.

The Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ show could finally resolve a Mustafar mystery that runs all the way back to Star Wars Rebels. Season 1 ended with Kanaan Jarrus captured and taken to Mustafar, a planet Hera had only heard of once before - when Kanaan described it where Jedi go to die. It's a curious comment, confirming the galaxy didn't know Darth Vader was based on Mustafar, and yet somehow Jedi had come to know none of their order should ever go there. The clear implication is that high-profile Jedi had either traveled to, or been taken to, Mustafar, where Darth Vader had killed them. Given Obi-Wan Kenobi is the first story starring a Jedi to be set during this period, it would be the perfect opportunity for Lucasfilm to explore this.

It's even possible Kanaan is thinking of Obi-Wan Kenobi himself - with the second duel taking place on Mustafar, the same world as the first. It's likely this second duel between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader would be a feint on the Jedi Master's part, with Obi-Wan tricking Vader that he has been killed - simply because that will stop Darth Vader and his Inquisitors looking for him. That would allow Obi-Wan to return to his self-imposed exile on Tatooine, where he can watch over Luke Skywalker without needing to worry about his presence leading to his charge being discovered by the Empire.

Even if the second duel happens elsewhere, though, the Disney+ TV show can still resolve this Star Wars Rebels mystery. Kanaan was transported to Mustafar when he was captured by the Empire in Star Wars Rebels season 1, and he's unlikely to have been the first. Given both Vader and his Inquisitors are set to appear in Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Dark Lord of the Sith's servants could take other Order 66 survivors to his castle for judgment.
