Obi-Wan Kenobi show actor answers a trailer question by throwing unnecessary shade at Game of Thrones. Ewan McGregor returns as the famed Jedi Knight in the next Disney+ Star Wars streaming offering.

Disney+ has of course already established quite a Star Wars streaming universe through shows like The Mandalorian, The Bad Batch and The Book of Boba Fett. Obi-Wan Kenobi will only expand that universe further by delving into the titular Kenobi’s activities after the momentous events of the Star Wars prequel trilogy. Those activities were in fact recently teased in a sizzle reel that among other things promised a lightsaber duel between Kenobi and Darth Vader. Indeed Vader/Anakin Skywalker actor Hayden Christensen has been announced as a Kenobi cast member, alongside Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse as Owen and Beru Lars.

One thing that hasn’t yet been unveiled however is an Obi-Wan Kenobi trailer. Speaking recently to Slashfilm, Kenobi actor Rory Ross addressed fans clamoring for a trailer and explained Lucasfilm’s reticence to release footage by throwing shade at another famous small screen fantasy franchise. He said:

I think a lot of fans are like, 'Where's the trailer? What's happening?' I think the big part of it is [Lucasfilm] is just trying to make sure that it's as polished as possible, so that when it comes out, it's not going to have that 'Game of Thrones' moment, where there's a coffee cup in the corner that they missed or something like that. It's going to have a lot of love that's poured into it, and it's just going to hopefully blow people's minds and just really enjoy seeing what's been going on.

Ross of course is referring to an infamous moment in Game of Thrones season 8 when someone left a coffee cup out on a table and the mistake somehow made it into the finished show. This gaffe indeed is often brought up by fans who hated GoT’s final season as an example of how lazy the production became as it sped down the homestretch to the series’ disappointing finale. But while Ross’ overall point about the need for meticulousness in production is noted, it’s worth pointing out that Star Wars has itself not exactly been immune to embarrassing errors over the years. The Mandalorian indeed fell victim to a hilarious one when a crew member in jeans could be glimpsed in the back of a shot. The movies have also featured their share of mistakes that made it on-screen, including the famous Stormtrooper head-bump in the original Star Wars.

So while it’s good to hear Ross’ reassurances about producers wanting to make Obi-Wan Kenobi as perfect as possible before they release any footage, it’s also a fact of reality that no amount of production vigilance can prevent gaffes from making it on screen. Gaffes happen to everyone and will likely happen to Obi-Wan Kenobi as well. Hopefully the newest Star Wars Disney+ show will be so compelling that audiences won’t even notice the odd coffee cup being left out on a table or the occasional otherwise hilarious head-bump. Obi-Wan Kenobi is set for release some time in 2022.
