Fans have been waiting eagerly for word on Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2 after the Disney+ series brought back one of Star Wars' most iconic characters. For many years, there was no official word about an Obi-Wan Kenobi project, despite it being high in demand for possible Star Wars spinoffs. Finally, fans saw Ewan McGregor return to the role, along with some other key characters, to add another chapter in Obi-Wan's life. The show left the door open for more, and now there is a lot of speculation about Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2.

Taking place in between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, Obi-Wan Kenobi explored Obi-Wan living in secret on Tatoonie and being called back to be a Jedi knight once again. Along with McGregor returning, the show saw the return of Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker and as Darth Vader to continue the story of their complicated relationship. The show also saw younger versions of other iconic Star Wars characters, including Luke and Leia, as well as some new additions to the universe. Nevertheless, there are still nine years' worth of stories from when season 1 ends and where A New Hope begins, which means there's always a chance of Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2 happening.

Obi-Wan Kenobi director Deborah Chow has openly noted there is still a 10-year gap between season 1 and the first Star Wars movie, meaning it's easy to imagine a scenario where Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2 became a reality. For all that's the case, though, Lucasfilm CEO seems skeptical it will happen. According to her, there were no plans at Lucasfilm for Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2. Nevertheless, in typical showrunner fashion, Kennedy left the door open for Obi-Wan to return as a cameo or tie-in in other Star Wars media, and also commented on how he could return in his own standalone movie. So while viewers will likely see Ewan McGregor return to play Obi-Wan at some point, it probably won't be in Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2.

Given Kennedy's comments, Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2 isn't actually happening anytime soon. The series hasn't been officially renewed, though there have been talks from the cast and crew about coming back for a second season. Ewan McGregor is interested in playing Obi-Wan again at some point, so Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2 could still come to fruition so long as he's on board. Director Deborah Chow is also open to returning to the series, though she's mentioned that Obi-Wan Kenobi was conceived as a limited series and, therefore, doesn't have any setup for a second season.

Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2: Release Date Speculation

In total, it took Obi-Wan Kenobi less than three years to go from announcement to release, and that includes a delay due to script issues as well as the pandemic's impact. Since Kennedy's confirmed Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2 is not currently in development, it could be several years before he returns to Disney+. Getting the cast and directors involved with the series doesn't seem like a problem, but crafting the right story for season 2 does.

Since there is no real development for Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2, pinning down any returning cast is somewhat difficult. Obviously, Ewan McGregor would return to play Obi-Wan again. It's also possible for Hayden Christensen to return in some capacity, as he's teased there are more Darth Vader stories to tell beyond his appearance in season 1. However, the end of the season seemed to imply Vader was attempting to leave Obi-Wan in the past. Now that Obi-Wan has connected with the Force ghost of his old master, Liam Neeson could also return as Qui-Gon Jinn, although Neeson recently expressed some negative comments on Disney's various spinoffs.

When the Obi-Wan Kenobi series began, Obi-Wan was truly a hermit, living a life sheltered from society. He had severed himself from the Force and buried his lightsaber. However, by the time A New Hope rolls around, Obi-Wan is attuned to the Force once more and has his lightsaber with him, as well as Anakin Skywalker's lightsaber. Star Wars Rebels fans know he fights and kills Maul on Tatooine in the time before A New Hope, so seeing what other powers Obi-Wan Kenobi has would make for an intriguing second season.

However, if Obi-Wan Kenobi season 2 does get greenlit, the announcement might come alongside a graphics-based teaser on social media, as several studios (Disney included) have opted to announce heavily-awaited projects this way.
