Obi-Wan Kenobi head writer, Joby Harold, responds to complaints regarding the Grand Inquisitor's (Rupert Friend) death. Ewan McGregor reprises his role as the titular character in the latest Star Wars series to release on Disney+. Set 10 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith, Kenobi lives in exile on the desert planet of Tatooine as he watches Luke Skywalker from afar. He has sworn himself to protect the future Jedi from the many new dangers of the Empire.

Following the Emperor's coup of the Galactic Republic and its transformation into the Galactic Empire, Darth Vader created an elite organization of dark side Force users known as The Inquisitorius. He charged the Grand Inquisitor to lead the platoon of Sith warriors as they hunt down and kill the remaining Jedi. However, during episode 2, "Part II," the Grand Inquisitor was cut down by his subordinate, Reva the Third Sister (Moses Ingram) in a fit of rage. This action seemingly retconned the Grand Inquisitor's death in the popular animated series, Star Wars Rebels.

In a recent interview with Variety, Harold addressed the complaints regarding the Grand Inquisitor's death as it seemingly contradicted earlier established canon. When asked if the death broke canon, Harold implied that it did not and that the show may address the incident in a later episode. Read what the Obi-Wan Kenobi writer said below.

In Episode Two, Reva drives her lightsaber into her superior, the Grand Inquisitor. Yet we saw him meet his end a different way in the animated Rebels show. Is there a break in canon there?

"As you know, we would never break canon. So, that's all I'll say. [Laughs.] Canon is everything."

So fans should wait to see where that's going before judging it as a mistake or a retcon?

"I can't speak to it beyond that. We all know where we're going in the show [from previous films and TV shows] so anytime you can undercut that, pull the rug on that, have a reversal …"

Obi Wan Kenobi Grand Inquisitor Death Scene

The Grand Inquisitor's death shocked many fans as it was seemingly confirmed by Star Wars: Rebels that the character met his demise at the hands of Kanan Jarrus (Freddie Prinze Jr.) in the season 1 finale. The villain was left hanging off of a walkway after being defeated in combat by Kanan. But instead of continuing the fight, the Grand Inquisitor dropped himself into the exploding generator aboard the Sovereign flagship. However, the Obi-Wan Kenobi writer indicates that there is still more story left to tell with the character and that the leader of the Inquisitorius may not be dead after all.

Reva's attack on the Grand Inquisitor in episode 2 appeared to be most assuredly fatal. Her lightsaber penetrated through the Grand Inquisitor's abdomen, leaving his body limp and his opened eyes lifeless. But as has been shown multiple times before in the Star Wars franchise, no one is ever really gone. Fennec Shand (Ming-Na Wen) was thought to be dead following in The Mandalorian season 1, however she returned in season 2 with a robotic stomach. Emperor Palpatine was controversially resurrected in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker through the use of cloning, a process that The Mandalorian has been teasing throughout its two seasons. Whether through the use of robotics or cloning, coupled with the head writer's assurance that Obi-Wan Kenobi will adhere to the established canon, The Grand Inquisitor's return seems likely.
