Star Wars: The Clone Wars character Commander Cody was originally set to appear in the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series, but he was eventually cut from the production. While several Clone Wars characters have made their way to live-action through the Star Wars Disney+ series, fans of Commander Cody continue to wait to see him return to non-animated Star Wars fare.

Commander Cody, more formally known as CC-2224, featured in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series as a high-ranking officer in the Republic's clone army. A clone of Jango Fett, he engaged in numerous daring exploits against the separatists. Cody later turned against his friend and general when ordered to kill Jedi during Order 66, thanks to the control chip implanted in his brain. In addition to The Clone Wars, Cody is set to return in The Bad Batch season 2.

According to Obi-Wan Kenobi writer Stuart Beattie, Commander Cody was set to appear in the Disney+ series as a secret friend of Obi-Wan on Tatooine. This would have made sense as The Clone Wars series established a friendship between Cody and Kenobi. However, Obi-Wan Kenobi went through multiple revisions over several years. It was originally slated to be a movie but was changed to a Disney+ series. The story for Obi-Wan Kenobi was also reportedly rewritten again due to similarities to The Mandalorian, moving away from a plot where Obi-Wan would protect a young Luke Skywalker from Darth Maul. It's likely that the Commander Cody plot was cut at some point during one of these many revisions, with his removal made during the production process to avoid overcrowding Obi-Wan Kenobi's plot and avoid the difficulties associated with depicting the Clone Trooper in live-action.

Was Cutting Commander Cody The Right Call By Obi-Wan Kenobi?

Ultimately, cutting Commander Cody from Obi-Wan Kenobi was probably the right call for the series. Obi-Wan Kenobi introduces a lot of new characters, including Reva, Haja, and Tala, and goes through a lot of plot in six episodes, so cutting back to Cody on Tatooine could have been one thing too many. Giving Obi-Wan a friend on Tatooine would have also undermined the sense of isolation he's shown to experience at the start of the series, which in turn would have weakened the emotional resolution of him connecting with Luke.

Commander Cody would also have been difficult to depict in live-action in Obi-Wan Kenobi. In his brief appearance in Revenge of the Sith, Commander Cody is played by Temuera Morrison. Morrison also played Boba Fett in The Book of Boba Fett and provided his voice for the Star Wars Visions animated series. As a result, Disney may have seen it as too confusing to have Morrison appear as another older version of a completely different character soon after The Book of Boba Fett.

However, Commander Cody could still appear in a live-action Star Wars project. Clone Wars creator Dave Filoni is a major influence on the Disney+ live-action Star Wars series, and several Clone Wars characters have made live-action appearances, such as Ahsoka in The Mandalorian and Cad Bane in The Book of Boba Fett. Given Disney's use of de-aging and other CGI techniques, there's likely a way for Morrison to return as a live-action Commander Cody while still keeping the character distinct. So, while Commander Cody was cut from Obi-Wan Kenobi, the character is almost certain to appear sooner or later again in the broader Star Wars universe.
