If you are walking down New York City streets don't be surprised if you see an unusually sleek and modern-looking NYPD squad car. What you might be looking at is just one of the 184 new Ford Mustang Mach-Es the city bought. NYC wants to be a national leader in combating climate change, and they back their words with actions. The NYC plan includes shifting all vehicles to electric, setting up thousands of superchargers, and building solar and wind energy plants to power the city that never sleeps.

The Mustang Mach-E does not have the best reputation, but it may be an undeserved misunderstanding of what the car can do. The Mustang fan base says a Mustang can never be electric and that the lines of the new Mustang Mach-E are not true to the Mustang name. The Mustang Mach-E GT not only lives up to the American symbol and all it stands for, but it also leaves the petrol V8 in the dust when it comes to speed and performance, a fact that die-hard Mustang fans sometimes find hard to accept.

NY announced it had placed an order for 184 all-electric Ford Mustang GT Mach-E. The city also approved an option to buy 250 Tesla Model 3 sedans. NYPD runs 6,200 light-duty enforcement vehicles, adding up to an official fleet of 30,000. The city of New York assures that all of their vehicles will switch to electricity eventually. They made the largest all-electric vehicle purchase for law enforcement ever, to send a clear message that they mean business.

The 184 Mustangs deal set back the city $11.5 million. But NYPD, like most law enforcement in the country, can’t put a price on their love for Mustangs. From the very first GTs to the 1988 special service Mustang street patrol to the V8, and now the Match-E, Mustangs are part of police history. “This order of all-electric Mach-Es will enable our law enforcement agencies to put electric models to the full test,” Keith Kerman Chief Fleet Officer, Deputy Commissioner says. The Mach-E will go through more than just a paint job before hitting the streets of New York. Dark tint windows, external sound systems, bullet-proof inserts, state-of-the-art communication systems, red and blue lights, spotlights, push bumpers, grill guards, and bull bars are some of the usual modifications for police cars.

New York took its stand on the “is the Mustang Mach-E a muscle car” debate. The Mach-E GT leaves well behind the V8 GT in almost all stats and performance. It can throw down an incredible 3.5 seconds doing 0 to 60, almost one second faster than the Mustang V8 petrol. The Mach-E also outruns the V8 horsepower with 480 over 460. Fully charged the Mack-E has a 270-mile range and even comes with a function Ford calls “Unbridled Extend Drive Mode.'' The mode is strictly for cars racing in high-speed tracks, "not intended for public roads," Ford warns.
