Since the announcement of the latest Nvidia graphics cards, it was clear that the GeForce RTX 3080 would be quite a powerhouse. A point that now seems to have been further confirmed by the results of the unit's first known benchmark testing, and especially when the results are compared to the RTX 2080.

The GeForce RTX 3080 is a part of Nvidia's newest line of GPUs, all of which will be available before the end of 2020. The GeForce RTX 30 series features three main options at the moment, the GeForce RTX 3070, the GeForce RTX 3080, and the GeForce RTX 3090. Each one has varying specs and pricing, with the 3070 being the most affordable option at $499 and the 3090 carrying a hefty price tag of $1,499. Of course, the one that most consumers will probably be interested in purchasing is the 3080, which will retail for $699 and is set to release on September 17. Nvidia has yet to provide information on pre-orders, but interested consumers can sign up for notifications on its website.

While the power of the GeForce RTX 3090 seems excessive for the needs of most PC users, the GeForce RTX 3080 manages to hit that sweet spot of power and utility. That doesn't mean that the RTX 3080 is anything to scoff at, in fact far from it. The first round of benchmark tests were recently posted by Videocardz and they provide a good indication of the true power of this new GPU, and it is quite impressive.

Nvidia's Powerful New Standard

The tests posted reveal that the RTX 3080 on average offers 168-percent of the power of the RTX 2080 Super, making it 68-percent more powerful. It was also able to outclass the RTX 2080 Ti with benchmarks showing a range of performance from 138 to 141-percent. Although these results are not confirmed, and while it is expected that next-generation graphic cards would be more powerful than predecessors, this is a huge leap that will definitely make a noticeable difference for anyone wanting to get the most out of their PC.

Of course, that power will become even more evident when the industry is able to see what the public is able to do with the new card. Nvidia has given consumers a preview of what to expect with a few trailers for upcoming games showing the RTX 3080 in action. One of the more impressive was a trailer demonstrating the RTX 3080 running Doom Eternal. Since Doom Eternal came out earlier this year, it was experienced by many on the last generation of Nvidia's graphic cards, which makes for an interesting comparison that could really put into perspective what kind of enhancements gamers can expect with the latest Nvidia tech.
