ZTE announced the Nubia Z40 Pro smartphone on Friday, and it is already making waves as the first Android device to officially include a MagSafe-like magnetic charging feature. The company has been teasing the Nubia Z40 Pro extensively on Chinese social media over the past few days. It is the latest device in the Nubia lineup, and is an upgrade over the Nubia Z30 Pro announced last year.

Apple debuted MagSafe in 2020 as part of its iPhone 12 lineup, enabling users to connect accessories like wireless chargers, cases and wallets to phones using magnets. While other vendors like Realme has demoed a similar feature called MagDart, support for the feature is not yet available on an actual smartphone. As a result, the magnetic charging feature has remained exclusive to iPhones until now.

The Nubia Z40 Pro is the latest flagship in the Nubia lineup, and it comes with impressive hardware. However, the one feature that is getting the most attention is the MagSafe-like function that will allow users to securely attach a wireless charger to the back of the device like the iPhone 12 and 13. It is worth noting that the feature is only available with the Z40 Pro 'Gravity Edition' that comes with a higher price tag.

The phone features a 6.67-inch AMOLED panel with FHD+ resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate. On the imaging side of things, the Z40 Pro sports a 64MP Sony IMX787 primary camera with a 1/1.3-inch sensor and an f/1.6 7P lens 35mm equivalent lens with OIS. There's also a 50MP ultra-wide camera and an 8MP periscope telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom. On the front, the device comes with a 16MP shooter housed within the punch-hole cutout at the top of the screen for selfies and video calls.

Other hardware features include a 5,000mAh battery with 80W wired charging for the regular models, while the Gravity Edition comes with a slightly smaller 4,600mAh battery with 66W wired charging. All versions of the phone run Android 12 with MyOS 12 on top. In terms of pricing, the Nubia Z40 Pro starts at CNY 3,399 (around $538) for the base model with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, while the Gravity Edition starts from CNY 4,299 (around $680). The device is only launching in China for now, with no word on whether it will ever make it to international markets. That said, ZTE is listed as one of the exhibitors at the MWC 2022 next week in Spain, so it is possible that the smartphone could make its global debut at that event.
