Warning: The following feature contains SPOILERS for Infinite Frontier #0.

Change is coming to the timeless island of Themyscira, with Nubia, the black Wonder Woman, having been crowned as the new Queen of the Amazons. This change came alongside the arrival of a new Wonder Woman, with the former queen Hippolyta taking her daughter Diana's place as the Amazon ambassador to Man's World.

The world of DC Comics has seen an abundance of Amazon champions in the wake of Dark Nights: Death Metal. Beyond the familiar Diana of Themyscira and the two Wonder Girls, Donna Troy and Cassandra Sandsmark, the DC Rebirth line brought about the return of one-time Wonder Woman Artemis of Bana-Mighdall as one of the Outlaws. More recently, the Future State event introduced a new Wonder Woman, Yara Flor, and reintroduced Diana's twin sister, Nubia, as a potential future Wonder Woman. However, the immediate future revealed by Infinite Frontier #0 arranged a different destiny for Nubia.

The frame story of Infinite Frontier #0 focused upon a newly ascended Diana of Themyscira traveling around the reality born of the events of Dark Nights: Death Metal and seeing how things had changed. Naturally one of the first places Diana checked was her homeland, where she found her Amazon sisters, including Nubia, engaged in unarmed combat, arguing over who would be worthy to replace her as Wonder Woman. Queen Hippolyta broke up the fighting by proposing a different test, wherein all the prospective Wonder Women would attempt to meet the gaze of the severed head of Medusa and the title being awarded to the first not to be turned to stone for all eternity. All but Nubia backed out of the challenge immediately.

Nubia Wonder Woman

To the surprise of Nubia and the unseen Diana, the box they thought contained the head of Medusa instead held Hippolyta's crown. Naturally, Hippolyta had no intention of petrifying her people for the sake of settling an argument, but neither did she intend to award the duties of Wonder Woman to anyone but herself. Instead, Hippolyta sought to test the resolve of those who wished to follow in Diana's footsteps and appoint the most worthy of them to take her place as Queen of the Amazons.

The appointment of Nubia to the throne was one of many surprises in Infinite Frontier #0 and it was one of the most satisfying as well. While it has been known for some time that Hippolyta would be taking up the role of Wonder Woman in the upcoming Justice League series, it was unclear how she would be balancing her responsibilities as Queen and the duties her daughter fulfilled until recently. With Nubia as the new Queen of the Amazons, however, Hippolyta can focus her considerable talents on acting as the Amazon's champion.
