Two days after pre-orders opened for the Nothing Phone (1), more than 100,000 people have reportedly joined the waitlist to buy the upcoming device. Nothing is a new consumer electronics brand launched in 2020 by OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei. The company has revealed that its first smartphone, the Phone (1), will be officially announced on July 12 in London at 4 p.m. local time (11 a.m. ET). It is one of the most-hyped smartphone launches this year despite rumors suggesting that it will come with mid-range hardware for the most part.

Carl Pei has proven himself to be a master marketer. His MO while launching the OnePlus One in 2014 was to create a sense of exclusivity by using an invite-only release model. Pei is now duplicating that same strategy with the Nothing Phone (1), thereby driving hype around the new phone. What's more, there have been several orchestrated leaks that have revealed many of the phone's design aspects and helped build up the mystique around it.

In a tweet over the weekend, Pei claimed that more than 100,000 people have already signed up to pre-order the Nothing Phone (1). Pre-orders opened on Friday in India and select European markets, and will continue until June 30, meaning the total pre-order numbers could be significantly higher. Nothing had earlier confirmed that the Phone (1) won't be sold in the U.S., likely due to uncooperative carriers.
