Jordan Peele teases the mysterious supernatural conflict lying inside his upcoming film Nope and hints at how it intersects with Daniel Kaluuya's character. Thanks to his previous directorial efforts Get Out and Us, Peele has turned himself into a must-watch filmmaker, meaning Nope is one of the most anticipated films of the year. That's especially impressive when considering how little is known about the project. Nope is currently set for release in July; Peele began hyping it last year, unveiling the simple title and mysterious first poster in the summertime. Since then, little else has really been revealed, yet excitement has only grown.

Nope reunites Peele with his Get Out leading man Daniel Kaluuya. It also stars Keke Palmer and Steven Yeun, who previously appeared in an episode of Peele's The Twilight Zone. In terms of plot details, Peele has been incredibly secretive. The recent release of the first Nope trailer confirms Palmer and Kaluuya's characters work as Hollywood horse trainers, and that the small town they reside in will become a landing ground for some kind of supernatural force. Could it be aliens? It's honestly unclear.

Speaking to Empire for the magazine's latest issue, Peele offered up a tantalizing tease about Nope's terrifying conflict while talking about Kaluuya's role. Peele revealed that he actually wrote the film with Kaluuya in mind, and that's because of how he connects with audiences. That actually helps a lot when it comes to the nefarious thing at the center of Nope. Peele said:

“I wrote NOPE with Daniel in mind for the role – a humble man destined for an epic and otherworldly confrontation. Daniel’s craft is on a different level, but it’s his warmth that grounds audiences even during points of absolute madness. You may be watching a nightmare, but when he’s on screen, at least you’ve got your brother with you, and that’s all you need.”

Peele's specific word choice - otherworldly and epic - seems to give credence to the theory that aliens are involved with NopeOf course, it could also be a phenomenon that stretches into the earth's deepest history. Both Get Out and Us had fantastical elements that were carefully woven into the realistic settings and themes, but Nope so far looks to be taking things even deeper into the supernatural. Whatever is coming for audiences is sure to be terrifying, so at least they will have Kaluuya's warm presence to soothe them.

Considering Peele's previous work, it seems likely that little else will be revealed about Nope in the coming months. Yes, there are bound to be at least a couple more trailers, and Kaluuya and the rest of the cast will begin promoting it at some point. In terms of concrete plot details, though, don't expect much else. Nope promises to be an exciting ride where the less known about it, the better. Until the movie arrives, all that there is to do is theorize over what little information the public has.
