Maria and someone in Lamb

Of the many great examples of folk horror in the last few years, Lamb is one of the most unique and disturbing. Set on an isolated farm in Iceland, it focuses on a couple who find that one of their sheep has given birth to a human/sheep hybrid.

Though it is light on the sort of jump-scares so common in horror movies, it nevertheless has a slow-burning intensity that builds to its startling, and deeply disturbing, conclusion. And, as always, Rapace delivers a searingly intense performance.

Leilah grinning in Bright

Netflix's Bright has the dubious distinction of being a movie very popular with audiences but almost universally disliked by critics. For all of that, it does take a unique spin on the fantasy genre, focusing as it does on a human and an orc who are members of the police.

Rapace, however, plays the villain, Leilah, an elf who wants to control a magic wand for her own purposes. Though Rapace could easily have given a rote performance, she manages to imbue her villain with a surprising amount of humanity.

Sam aiming a gun in Close

One of Rapace’s great skills as an actress is an ability to craft characters who have a steely determination. That particular attribute of her performance is much evident in Close, which focuses on a female bodyguard and her attempts to protect her client.

Though some might find the plot predictable in the way it makes use of the conventions of the action thriller, the fact that it puts two women in the center of the action, as well as Rapace’s performance, make it a very entertaining treat.
