HMD Global has announced the Nokia G60 5G, and it reinforces the company's goal of making smartphones that are not only great for consumers but also the environment. More manufacturers are now switching to sustainable practices and this has resulted in quite a number of devices that have launched in the past few years featuring parts made from recycled materials.

This new trend has also become sort of a selling point for the manufacturers, with some brands creating product lines specifically for devices that are made from recycled products. An example is Acer, whose recently announced Chromebook Vero 514 belongs to its Vero line. Products under this Vero name are made from recycled ocean plastic and shipped in packaging made from recycled paper.

The Nokia G60 5G is mostly made from plastic. The back is 100% recycled plastic while the frame, which is flat, is 60% recycled plastic. The phone has a bit of roughness to it thanks to several pimple-like dots that grace the back. There is no clear pattern to the dots, so it is most likely due to the fact that the plastic is recycled. HMD Global says the choice of material makes the phone tough against knocks while being beneficial to the environment. In addition, the Nokia G60 5G has IP52 dust and water resistance which means it has limited protection against dust and direct sprays of water up to 15 degrees. The phone is available in Pure Black and Ice Gray.

The specs of the Nokia G60 are not bad for a mid-range smartphone. The display is 6.58 inches and features an FHD+ resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and a waterdrop notch which houses the 8MP camera. The screen is also protected by Gorilla Glass 5 and has a maximum brightness level of 500 nits. There is a Snapdragon 695 processor powering the phone, and buyers will be able to choose from three configurations consisting of 4+64GB, 4+128GB, and 6+128GB. There's also a microSD card slot for users to add more storage. Like the Nokia G50, this phone is equipped with three rear cameras, although they are stacked vertically. The primary rear camera is a 50MP f/1.8 camera, and this is joined by a 5MP ultrawide angle camera and a 2MP depth sensor.

HMD Global has placed the fingerprint scanner on the side where it doubles as the power button, and the phone supports Face Unlock. The Nokia G60 5G also has an FM radio, an audio jack, and single speaker, along with support for Wi-Fi 5, NFC, Bluetooth 5.1 (including Qualcomm's aptX HD, aptX Classic, aptX Adaptive, and aptX Adaptive Bluetooth codecs). HMD Global will sell the Nokia G60 5G with single SIM support (nano or eSIM) or dual SIM support, depending on the market. Regional differences will also determine if it will come with a charger in the box, as some markets will get it with a 20W adapter while others won't. The battery capacity is 4,500mAh and HMD Global says it will provide up to 2 days of use.

The hardware is not the only side of the Nokia G60 5G that's influened by sustainability, as the software comes with a “3-3-3 promise”. This means the phone, which comes pre-installed with Android 12, will receive three years of Android upgrades and three years of security updates, and will also get a three-year extended warranty. The Nokia G60 5G is already available for purchase in some parts of Europe with a starting price of €319. There is no information yet on whether a US release is happening, but since the Nokia G50 is sold in the US, there's a chance the Nokia G60 5G will also make it to North America at some point
