HMD Global has announced the Nokia 5710 XpressAudio, an unusual feature phone that has built-in wireless earbuds. The company also announced the 8-inch Nokia T10 tablet and a couple of other feature phones for select markets. Despite the popularity of smartphones, feature phone sales are still in the millions every year.

HMD Global is one of the leading brands in this segment. Since it took over the Nokia brand name in 2017, it has been relaunching classic Nokia phones with a refreshed design and modern features such as LTE, Wi-Fi, and mobile hotspot, while keeping the mainstays such as the alphanumeric keypad, removable battery, and weeks-long standby time.

The Nokia 5710 isn't a modern version of a Nokia classic phone, however, its design is one that has been borrowed from the now-defunct XpressMusic line. The phone has curved top and bottom edges, dedicated playback controls flanking the display on either side, and an alphanumeric keypad. What makes the Nokia 5710 stand out from the other feature phones on the market is that it comes with a built-in charging case for included wireless earbuds, tucked into a compartment on the back. The Nokia 5710 will be available in black and white colors.

A Slide-Out Earbuds Charging Case

HMD Global isn't the first manufacturer to have earbuds built into its products. In 2020, Lenovo launched the ThinkBook 15 Gen 2 laptop with earbuds that slide out from the right edge. There are also several cheap smartwatches that have earbuds built-in. Nevertheless, this is still a novelty and one that will get a lot of people talking. On the Nokia 5710, the charging case is on the back and is covered by a red plastic slider. When pulled down, it reveals the earbuds which are black or white depending on the colorway purchased. When not in use, owners can simply store them in the compartment where they will be recharged. They have a battery life of up to four hours but lack premium features like active noise cancellation.

The specs of the Nokia 5710 XpressAudio are similar to several of HMD Global's feature phones. Its screen is a 2.4-inch QVGA color display. It is missing a front-facing camera but a 0.3MP camera sits on the back alongside an LED flash. The Unisoc T107, a 1GHz single-core chip, drives the phone, and it is paired with 48MB of RAM and 128MB of storage. There is a microSD card slot for adding more storage but the maximum capacity supported is 32GB. Furthermore, the Nokia 5710 has stereo speakers, an MP3 player, and an FM radio and owners can choose to listen via the loudspeaker or the built-in earbuds. Interestingly, since the phone comes with earbuds, HMD Global decided to skip the headphone jack. The good news is that the earbuds can also be connected to other devices.

The phone is available in single SIM and dual SIM variants with support for 4G LTE and VoLTE, but there is no mention of Wi-Fi and hotspot support. It also packs a 1,450mAh removable battery and charges via a micro-USB port. It is priced at £74.99 ($89) and will go on sale in July. In addition to the Nokia 5710, HMD Global also announced the £64.99 ($77) Nokia 2660 Flip which is similar to the Nokia 2760 Flip 4G sold in the U.S. There's also the Nokia 8210 4G that's priced the same. At the moment, it looks like none of the phones including the Nokia 5710 XpressAudio will be released in North America.
