Warning: spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home

Following the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s tradition, Spider-Man: No Way Home includes two post-credits scenes, but fans have found these to be underwhelming and have even labeled them as the worst in Spider-Man’s history – but that spot actually belongs to The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Among the characters that continue to be an active part of the MCU is Spider-Man, who is now back with his third solo movie, which is also (aside from Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, of course) his biggest adventure to date as he had to deal with the multiverse and some of the dangers that come with it.

After Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal) revealed his identity to the world and framed him for his murder, Spider-Man: No Way Home sees Peter Parker (Tom Holland) dealing with the consequences of this big mess. In an effort to keep those he loves safe, Peter asks Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to cast a spell that will make everyone forget he’s Spider-Man, but after messing with the spell a couple of times, it ends up opening the gates to the multiverse. This allows the arrival of villains from other Spider-Man universes, as are Doctor Octopus (Alfred Molina), Electro (Jamie Foxx), Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Lizard (Rhys Ifans), and Sandman (Thomas Haden Church). No Way Home also brought together the three versions of Peter Parker that have been on the big screen so far: Holland, Tobey Maguire, and Andrew Garfield.

At the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter realizes the only way to save the multiverse is by having everyone forget him, so he makes Strange cast a spell that will erase him from everyone’s memories, and this also returns everyone – reformed villains and Spider-Men – to their respective universes. The mid-credits scene in No Way Home takes place during those final minutes before everyone goes back to their universes, and follows Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy) and Venom as they try to understand what has happened in the MCU, but they are also sent back to their side of the multiverse, unknowingly leaving a spawn of the symbiote in the MCU. The post-credits scene is a surprise trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and while both "scenes" are exciting, many fans were disappointed as they don’t tease Peter’s future, but they aren’t worse than what The Amazing Spider-Man 2 did.

Andrew Garfield in The Amazing Spider-Man 2

By the end of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), was in the process of forming the Sinister Six, and the post-credits scene shows the schematics of the weapons and technology of the future members of the Sinister Six: Rhino, Vulture, Doctor Octopus, Mysterio, Kraven the Hunter, and the Green Goblin. Sony’s plan was to produce a series of spinoff movies, including a Sinister Six one, so the post-credits scene of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 teased their arrival – sadly, the underperformance of the movie led to the cancellation of the spin-offs, so the post-credits scene never paid off. While the mid-credits scene in No Way Home wasn’t the Spider-Man set-up many were hoping for (especially as the movie ended with Peter all alone and starting over), the Venom tease was an interesting moment that sets up the symbiote’s future in the MCU.

This tradition in the MCU has gone from exciting to detrimental to this universe, as fans have grown to expect a specific type of scene that will tease the following movie of the main character or the next one in this universe, and lately, these scenes have also introduced new characters (like Harry Styles’ Eros in Eternals). When it comes to bad post-credits scenes in Spider-Man's history, the ones from Spider-Man: No Way Home might be at the top of the list for some, but they definitely aren’t worse than that of The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
