After the massive success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, it seems that Morbius' best chances for a crossover have been doomed from the very start. It's already been made clear that Morbius will feature Michael Keaton as the Vulture, and Jared Leto also hinted at future villain crossovers. Exactly what these might look like isn't entirely clear, although it's been speculated that Tom Hardy's Venom and Aaron Taylor-Johnson's Kraven the Hunter may well be two of the potential crossover characters.

While Morbius' Spider-Man Easter egg hints at the potential for a much bigger shared universe, this may have already caused a problem for the vampire's crossover future. Spider-Man: No Way Home saw Peter Parker break open the Multiverse, allowing for a Spider-Man crossover that sets up a potential reshaping of the MCU's very foundations. In No Way Home, the MCU's Spider-Man teamed up with previous cinematic iterations of the character to fight a number of villains from their respective movies.

However, that story was neatly concluded within No Way Home, effectively ruling out the possibility of the return of some of Spider-Man's biggest villains. There is still a wealth of Spider-Man movie villains that could cross over, but No Way Home sets a very high bar for any future plans to use similar plot threads. While seeing Jared Leto's Morbius fight Tom Holland's Spider-Man would be excellent, plans for another villain crossover would simply feel like a retread of No Way Home's success.

Morbius teases future crossovers with marvel villains

Of course, there are villains within Spider-Man's MCU movies that may well be part of these potential plans. With Keaton's Vulture set to appear, there's also the potential to pay off Spider-Man: Homecoming's Scorpion and Shocker teases, which, combined with the continued success of Tom Hardy's Venom movies, could certainly make for an enticing team of villains for a Morbius crossover. However, none of these villains have the same status in Spider-Man's rogues' gallery as those from No Way Home, ultimately making for a less satisfying crossover.

In addition, No Way Home's credits scene sees Hardy's Venom return from the MCU to his own universe, further complicating the links between the various potential villains. Keaton's role in Morbius will undoubtedly go some way to explaining the film's place in relation to the MCU, but No Way Home's definitive ending makes future Spider-Man villain crossovers much more complex. With the most likely possibility being that this would require further explanation of a Multiverse narrative, another team of Spider-Man villains from multiple universes would follow too closely in No Way Home's footsteps.

Unfortunately, the massive success of No Way Home and its emotional, MCU-bending story may have inadvertently caused problems for Morbius. There's already an indication that No Way Home ruined Morbius' biggest selling point by seemingly closing the door on future Spider-Man crossovers, but Leto's teases of his character's future make it unclear exactly how this can be organically achieved. It seems as though plans for Morbius to start another Multiverse narrative may have already been undermined by the resounding success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, potentially dooming the plot device before it can ever truly come to pass.
