Hello Games is adding mechs to No Man's Sky in a new update. This comes as the latest in a recent series of updates that have improved and altered the game in a variety of interesting ways, from mundane but much-needed quality of life improvements to the ability to tame and ride alien creatures and even grow and pilot a living organic spaceship.

Few games have garnered as much controversy and media attention as No Man's Sky. When the game was first announced, it made the audacious claim of being able to generate an entire galaxy's worth of fully realized and fully explorable planets. As the game progressed through its development period, director Sean Murray made more and more outlandish claims about the scope of the project, which only inflated the attention already being heaped on the game. Considering just how tremendous the hype for No Man's Sky was, the disappointment that followed its release was perhaps inevitable. Players complained that, as vast as the galaxy was, it just didn't contain enough to do. So many features, including several Murray had promised before release, were absent, and the game felt empty and repetitive after only a few hours.

Not content to let No Man's Sky go down in history as one of gaming's biggest disappointments, Hello Games threw a lot of effort into improving the game after launch. This effort took a few years to pay off, but after a long series of updates, the game is finally beginning to live up to the promises it made when it was first announced, and Hello Games seems to have no intention of stopping. In a brand new update, they have announced the addition of giant mechs players can build and pilot in the game. These mechs have a number of advanced capabilities, including total protection against planetary hazards like extreme temperatures and toxic atmosphere. They also have powerful resource gathering capabilities and an advanced jetpack to allow greater freedom of movement than what's offered on foot. In addition to mechs, the update includes a host of other, smaller changes, like upgrades to the exocraft vehicles players can build and drive in the game. These upgrades include solar panels, improved environment scans, and a new technology that allows No Man's Sky players to summon exocraft to any planet as long as their freighter is in the same solar system. Some graphics updates have also been added, as well as a few minor changes to quality of life in No Man's Sky's base building. While these are all excellent additions, the mechs are clearly the star of the show.

No Man's Sky is undoubtedly one of the biggest comeback stories in the gaming industry. It's downright inspiring how much work the developers have done to make up for the glaring deficiencies which made the game such a total letdown when it launched. As it stands now, No Man's Sky is still far from perfect. There are some repetitive environments and creature designs, and players still have some very legitimate complaints to make. But if this new update is any indication, Hello Games is committed to making No Man's Sky the best game it can be, and that's a very commendable effort.
