The most recent in a continuing series of massive content updates for No Man's Sky has added creepy derelict spaceships to the universe. The update is titled Desolation and it features procedurally generated freighters that offer players great rewards at but also pose great threats. Only those who are brave of heart dare enter the crypt of the Derelict Freighters.

After being deemed a failure at launch, No Man's Sky has rebuilt its player base and integrity, by offering players a series of free updates that add a massive amount of content to the game. Hello Games, the small team of developers who have produced No Man's Sky, have continuously updated the game since its release in 2016. Each update focuses on revamping a single facet of the title and the updates have spanned underwater ecosystems, base building, piloting mechs, and much more. Over the past four years, No Man's Sky has evolved from a failure to an amazing interstellar sandbox experience in the eyes of fans.

In the latest patch notes published to the official No Man's Sky website, the new additions to the game are explained in detail. The Desolation update adds abandoned Derelict freighters to the vast openness of space that players can explore to collect rare items and encounter dangerous enemies. Players can explore space and attempt to find these ships on their own, but their locations can also be sold to the player by local scrap dealers. In addition to abandoned ships, the update adds more story content, improvements to combat, and new customization options to player-owned freighters.

While exploring abandoned ships sounds like it would get old after the first few, the update boasts procedurally generated stories for each ship the player discovers. As well, each ship's layout is procedurally generated, meaning that no two ships are the same. Each ship has its own unique story to tell, items to scavenge, and hulls to explore. This update may sound too good to be true, but if it is anything like the previous expansions then it is sure to take No Man's Sky to the next level.

With the previous addition of multiplayer, each ship can be explored with a crew by the player's side – and a crew may indeed be needed. The abandoned freighters are filled with hostile enemies as well as environmental hazards. For example, mounted turrets and security systems will take aim at any player that crosses their sights. The new Desolation update has something for everyone from the thrill-seekers to the treasure hunters to the loremaster. No Man's Sky Desolation is sure to be another smash hit of an update.
