Colors Live is making its way to the Nintendo Switch after a successful Kickstarter campaign, which promises a way to make the most out of the device's touch screen. Originally premiering on the Nintendo DS 13 years ago, the painting app has received a tremendous amount of support.

For those unfamiliar, back in 2007, Colors! premiered on the Nintendo DS as a simplistic, digital application that made use of the device's stylus, allowing users to draw, paint, and create digital artwork. After receiving critical acclaim on the DS, Colors! was adapted for iPhone, PS Vita, and even received a sequel on the Nintendo 3Ds, called Colors! 3D. Since then, there have been no further iterations to the series, nor updates from its developers until now, where on May 13th, a Kickstarter campaign was launched to bring the application, now known as Colors Live, to the Nintendo Switch. Realizing however that the Switch's touch screen and joy-cons wouldn't be an ideal way to create digital artwork, Jen Anderson, the original developer of the Colors Series, has discovered a way to enhance the user's experience.

According to the already funded Kickstarter campaign, Anderson has been asked by many people to bring Colors! to the Nintendo Switch, but didn't want to unless he could develop a version that was better than what he released for the 3DS. Without a stylus on the Switch, users would have to rely on finger-painting, which Anderson believes wouldn't be very fun. A little over a year ago however, an inventor reached out to Anderson with a pressure-sensitive pen that could be adapted to work with Switch's touch screen. Together the two developed the Colors SonarPen, which will come bundled with Colors Live upon its release.

Seeing this innovation, thousands flocked to the Kickstarter campaign, surpassing its original goal of $16,318, by over $100,000. With this increase in funding, Anderson and his team have added stretch goals to implement features to Colors Live, such as a select & move tool, improved layer management, and speciality brushes that will ultimately improve the user's experience. In addition to this, Colors Live will include a brand new Colors Quest mode, where players can go and complete daily art challenges in their own unique styles.

Whether it be painting in Animal Crossing, creating levels in Mario Maker, or making music with boxes, Nintendo has always found a way to implement artistic creativity into their games and products. Although a stylus isn't absolutely necessary to create digital paintings on the Nintendo Switch, it is one that simply makes it easier for players to express themselves on the device. With that in mind, Colors Live will be a fantastic addition to the Switch's marketplace, if only to accentuate the creativity that Nintendo and it's players so clearly have.
