In the United Kingdom, the Nintendo Switch outsold every other console combined in 2020. The Switch has been selling incredibly well and, as of September 2020, it had sold a total of 68.3 million units. This put it just shy of outselling the Nintendo 3DS, which sold roughly 75.8 million units in its lifetime. As discussed by President of Nintendo of America Doug Bowser in an interview from last month, the Switch is approximately halfway through its lifespan.

Although Bowser said that rumors of a Switch Pro are false, new information suggests the contrary. It's recently been revealed by a dataminer that a Switch Pro could be on the horizon. Some purported perks include 4K graphics, an OLED display, and improved battery life and cooling system. Bowser claims that, because the standard and Lite versions are selling so well, Nintendo is focused on selling current systems.

Even if the Switch Pro doesn't happen, Nintendo's console still outsold every other system combined in the U.K. last year, as reported by Nintendo Life. This means that the Switch outsold the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S, and Xbox Series X combined. Industry analysts have even predicted that, when the Switch Pro likely releases, it will go on to outsell the highly sought-after PS5 in 2021.

This news isn't all that surprising, considering the powerhouse that the Nintendo Switch is from a selling standpoint. However, what's truly remarkable is that it outsold every other console combined. Even though the Switch had a slow year compared to 2017 or even 2019, it still had some eye-grabbing first-party titles. The most noteworthy of these is Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the game that absolutely dominated the beginning of quarantine. It's one of Nintendo's best-selling games, and it's not even a year old. It's nearly outsold the best-selling Switch title, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Hopefully, this impressive news means that more excellent games will be making their way to the Switch. Although Nintendo has plenty of wonderful first-party content, maybe it will secure a few more third-party releases since outside partners could be seeing this news and feel incentivized to port or develop games for the Switch. Additionally, a Switch Pro seems practically inevitable, so third-party developers will likely take an even greater interest in the Switch than they already have. With rumors of a Switch Pro all but confirmed, it seems that the Nintendo Switch's only trajectory is upward.
