An inventive modder has created a working Nintendo Switch dock using the shell of an old Nintendo 64 console and two GameCube controllers. The classic console originally released back in 1996 and is ideally suited as a dock thanks to the fact that it has a large slot for game cartridges on its top.

This is not the first time that gamers have created some interesting modifications to the Nintendo Switch. The Nintendo console has been a hotbed for modders, who have taken advantage of its small size to make some very distinctive creations. One custom builder was able to create a working dock using a GameCube that he gutted, with working GameCube controllers. Meanwhile, another modder put together a virtual pinball machine using the portable hardware.

A modder has created a unique Nintendo Switch dock, using the shell of an old Nintendo 64 console and two GameCube controllers. Reddit user slum_boy showed off their creation in the online forum and provided a step-by-step guide to how they did it. Using parts of from a regular Switch dock and a GameCube adapter, slum_boy put together the working dock. According to the modder, they "found the N64 at a garage sale and took the parts out to make room for the Switch hardware." They even learned how to solder in order to fit all of the wires into the shell of the Nintendo 64.

"I opened up the cartridge slot just a bit so that the Switch would fit in there once I got the hardware from the dock in. After I put the new hardware in, I put an HDMI extension and a USB-C extension that lead out the original ports on the back of the console."

Custom consoles and mods have become popular over recent years. Even manufacturers like Microsoft and Sony now produce specially made custom consoles to sell to players who want a bit more personality in their platform of choice. Last year, Microsoft collaborated with Game of Thrones to produce two special edition Xbox One consoles and other companies offer skins, cases, and modified consoles.

Ever since the Nintendo Switch first released, modders have been using it to build some creative custom machines. But even among the dozens of other mods that have been made public, this stands out thanks to the fact that it elegantly combines three different generations of Nintendo consoles into one package. It will be interesting to see if the Reddit user can somehow find a solution for the Joy-Con controllers so that they can charge while the Switch is docked, yet that isn't a major problem considering just how impressive this mod is.
