Four new titles have been announced for the Nintendo Switch Online retro game service in North America, including a timeless classic: Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. The SNES Switch app added the original Donkey Kong Country back in June, so it only makes sense that the publisher would follow up with Rare's 1995 follow-up. Often abbreviated as DKC 2, this 2D platformer introduced Dixie Kong as Diddy's gameplay partner. In this adventure, the two young Kongs set off on a quest to rescue Donkey Kong from the clutches of the evil Kremlins.

This marks the fifth time that the middle chapter in Rare's SNES Kong trilogy has been re-released. It first struck residual gold on the Game Boy Advance in 2004, becoming a bestseller in North America for the handheld. This earned it a top priority on Nintendo's Virtual Console services, and the game later appeared for purchase on the Wii, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS. Because the game arrived so late into the Super Nintendo's lifespan, it's likely that some players skipped it for cutting edge PlayStation 1 titles at the time, which could explain its continued success whenever it pops up again.

Nintendo announces that Donkey Kong Country 2 is one of four new retro games to hit Nintendo Switch on September 23. The second Super Nintendo title will be The Peace Keepers, a brawler known as Rushing Beat Syura in Japan. Developed and published by Jaleco, it's the sequel to Brawl Brothers, another brawler that launched with the Switch's SNES collection. On the NES side of things, Natsume's S.C.A.T.: Special Cybernetic Attack Team premieres on the service. This regrettably named side-scroller is a shoot 'em up in which players take control of dual protagonists named Arnold and Sigourney in perfectly late '80s/early '90s cheese befitting the game's 1991  North American release date.

Last but certainly not least, Nintendo decided to sneak a monumental retro game release in while everyone was distracted by Diddy. Mario's Super Picross is a Super Famicom game that is making its North American debut as part of this batch of retro ports. The sequel to the Game Boy's Mario's PicrossSuper Picross skipped a North American release because of the commercial failure of the original title. The success of other Nintendo picross titles like Picross 3D has proven that there are some fans of nonogram logic puzzles in the region, so now players can experience this title for the first time.

Whether someone is excited to get back to Donkey Kong Country: Diddy's Kong Quest or try out Mario's Super Picross for the first time, this new batch of classic Nintendo games is an exciting addition to the Switch library. While it would be nice to see bigger drops of games, especially from publishers that haven't added much before, the fact that anyone carrying around a Switch has access to almost a full decade of Nintendo's output on home console is pretty cool. If Nintendo can keep up the additions and find other Japanese exclusives to release in North America, then many will stay very interested in their online subscription.
