Heat 2 might not be a movie (yet), but it was released as a novel written by Michael Mann, the writer and director of the original movie, and he wants to turn it into a film. The movie might take place after 1995's Heat, but in true The Godfather Part II fashion, it's also a prequel that takes place before the original's events.

A movie adaptation might have trouble recasting or de-aging the original character, but it still has the potential to be great. But Heat isn't the only '90s movie that deserves a prequel, and Redditors have some great choices. Between cult classic horrors about space and hell, a Baybastic action movie about a former SAS captain, and Vietnam War satire, it's never too late.

The Matrix (1999)

Neo and Trinity shoot up a lobby in The Matrix

The Matrix is always in contention for sequels, prequels, spin-offs, and anything else fans can think of, as the world-building of the original movie is so expansive and creative. Unfortunately, all the choices made about the franchise's direction since 1999 have been the wrong ones. The Wachowskis should have probably turned to the fans for ideas, as their Matrix stories are much more interesting, including a Morpheus origin idea from OctoberNoir.

The Redditor pitches, "A bittersweet tale of a young Morpheus who believes he is the One. Ultimately, his failure to fulfill his expectations and acceptance of the truth shapes the man he becomes." How Morpheus came to be is one of the biggest mysteries of the franchises, which would be fascinating to delve into. But at the same time, it might be like beating a dead horse based on The Matrix Resurrections' reviews.

The Truman Show (1998)

Jim Carrey pointing a finger in The Truman Show

There has always been talk about a Truman Show sequel, which would be interesting if it delved into how Truman struggled with real life, something that had been kept from him for his entire existence. However, lgnxhll flips the switch and believes a prequel is a better idea. The Redditor explains, "It would be cool to see the process that led society to the point it is in the movie."

However, reality TV is more popular than it has ever been, and there's no sign of it slowing down. Watching a movie about the world's obsession with the genre might be hard to watch, as it'd essentially be holding up a mirror to the audience. But it could be interesting to see how the show was built and follow a much younger Truman as he's continuously tricked into believing Seahaven is real life.

Hook (1991)

Hook (1991) - Rufio

Superawesomecoolman wants, "I want more movies in the Hook universe!" While it's easy to argue that a prequel to Hook is any one of the thousands of Peter Pan movies that have been released, there's some reasoning behind the Redditor's comments. A short movie prequel was Kickstarted by Rufio actor Dante Basco, which follows Rufio before Peter entered his life and is called Bangarang.

The concept is strange and one that nobody asked for, but Rufio is such an undeniably interesting and hotheaded character that more of him isn't a bad thing. And while the short film isn't exactly on the same scale as the Steven Spielberg-directed release, it has a good enough story that it could be turned into a feature-length movie.

Léon: The Professional (1994)

Jean Reno and Natalie Portman holding a gun in Leon The Professional

Like The Truman Show, a lot have fans have commonly discussed the prospect of a Léon: The Professional sequel, as it ends with the assumption that Matilda (Natalie Portman) takes up the mantle of being an expert assassin. And as Portman just so happened to grow up to become an Acadamy Award-winning actor and is the perfect age to play an assassin, now's a better time than ever.

However, Samurai5625 thinks a prequel would be better, and one that follows the villain instead of Léon. The Redditor posits, "I'd like to see it be about Norman Stansfield..." Norman is one of the most memorable bad guys of the '90s, as he's completely reckless and unpredictable. Even people who haven't seen the movie know who he is, as the shot where he screams "Everyone!" has been turned into a meme. So a prequel based on the character could have a surprising amount of reach.

Pulp Fiction (1994)

Marsellus Wallace prepares to get revenge on the molesters in Pulp Fiction

Pulp Fiction tells so many different stories that all intertwine, and the idea of a prequel could apply well to any one of the characters. Whether it's following Pumpkin and Honey Bunny's Bonnie and Clyde-like criminal lives or Jules and Vincent carrying out more contracts, there are so many possibilities.

Haanalisk thinks the best option is to follow "Marcellus Wallace's rise to power." The idea has a lot of potential, and Jules and Vincent could even appear in it. But more than anything, a prequel about Marcellus could finally uncover what the deal really is with the Band-aid on his neck, as Pulp Fiction fans have some interesting theories about it.

Event Horizon (1997)

Laurence Fishburn in Event Horizon

A deleted user wants a movie that takes place before the events of the 1990s cult classic. The Redditor explains, "A prequel to Event Horizon would offer another chance to make the movie the director intended to have." The user is referring to the countless reports of the movie's studio meddling, and it's well-documented how director Paul W.S. Anderson wasn't happy with the final product.

The filmmaker recalled when he first screened the first cut of the movie to the studio executives, noting, "Someone actually said to me, ‘We’re the studio that makes Star Trek!’ They weren’t only horrified by my movie; they felt I was besmirching Star Trek." A prequel could restore some of the original and very bloody concepts of the horror sci-fi flick, as it could follow another crew inadvertently finding the hellish dimension.

The Shawshank Redemption (1994)

Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins in The Shawshank Redemption

If there's any movie from the 1990s that's completely standalone and tells a whole story from start to finish, it's The Shawshank Redemption. But Ramblerandgambler thinks a prequel is possible, pitching, "Prequel to Shawshank Redemption where it shows Red going to prison for murder and learning the ropes in prison and rising to become top of the heap."

Red was never the head of the prison inmates and completely kept to himself and stayed out of trouble, so a prequel about him wouldn't be all that exciting. However, it's about time fans got another prison drama from filmmaker Frank Darabont, who directed both Shawshank and The Green Mile.

The Rock (1996)

Sean Connery issuing a thumbs up in The Rock.

Some might argue that the 1996 movie already has a prequel, which is Never Say Never Again, as many believe The Rock is a secret James Bond movie. However, putting aside the mountains of evidence that points to that being the case, a deleted user wants to see not just one but two prequels to the action-packed '90s movie.

The Redditor comments, "two prequels for The Rock, one about Mason, one about Hummel." John Mason is one of the funniest and most badass SAS captains ever, but as the film follows him long after his retirement, there are decades of stories that a prequel could tell.

The Big Lebowski (1998)

The-Big-Lebowski-header

The Big Lebowski is one of the Coen brothers' best movies, as it perfectly combines their dry humor and ambiguous and philosophical dramas. It'd be hard to recreate that magic with a prequel, but JuiceDiesel thinks it could work if it focuses on Walter instead of the Dude.

The Redditor pitches, "A prequel to Big Lebowski where the movie is set during Vietnam war and follows Walter Sobchak." That could make for a genuinely great satirical war movie, especially given that Walt is such a hot-headed character. But that would also ruin one of the best Big Lebowski fan theories, which is that Walt never actually spent any time in Vietnam.

Se7en (1995)

Goopjohnny wants a prequel to the disturbing 1990s thriller, Se7en. The Redditor explains, "I would love to see a prequel to Seven. The way the killer functioned was so interesting." A Se7en prequel could happen, but not in the way that the Redditor wants. The movie's serial killer, John Doe, doesn't have any other kills other than the ones found in the movie, and as was mentioned in the film, his master plan was years in the making.

However, a prequel could follow Detective William Somerset (Morgan Freeman) and his years as a detective before his retirement. As the character explained, what led to his retirement was all of the messed-up things he had seen in the city, and it sounds like it could be a whole movie of its own.
