Hulu just officially wrapped up its intriguing miniseries Nine Perfect Strangers, from the creator of Big Little Lies and The Undoing. Like those stories, this was a twisty drama that left audiences coming back every week. The mystery was good but it was the unique cast of characters who really made this show click.

Even better than the characters on their own was when they paired up into various duos. These could be family members, romantic relationships, rivals, or two people simply becoming friends. Whatever the case may be, they were the most entertaining duos to see on screen during the series.

Masha & Yao

The relationship between Masha Dmitrichenko (Nicole Kidman) and her devoted employees was something that caught the interest of fans almost immediately. A few episodes in, it was revealed that Masha was in a sexual relationship with Yao (Manny Jacinto) and they seemed to be closer than anyone had realized at that point.

Of course, that ended up not being totally true. Masha was also having relations with Delilah and the two actually kept that a secret, while Delilah and Masha knew of each other's romances with Yao and he was unaware of it all. That made it so these two had solid scenes together but things weren't as interesting as they were with others. Yao remained loyal to Masha to the end and that's about all that can be said of them.

Delilah & Yao

Yao's more meaningful relationship was the one he had with Delilah (Tiffany Boone). They had an interesting bond considering they were underlings to Masha no matter how much Masha tried to say they were partners. Delilah gained sympathy at the start due to seemingly being jealous of Masha and Yao, only to reveal that she was seeing Masha herself.

Even with the confusing bits of their relationship and Delilah keeping the secret of being intimate with Marsha, you could tell that these two truly cared for each other. Delilah pleaded with Yao to follow her to go to the cops but he didn't listen and stayed with Masha. There was no satisfying resolution with their storyline but again, they worked well enough together.

Carmel & Masha

In terms of being antagonistic, no relationship felt that way more than Masha's with Carmel Schneider (Regina Hall). When Carmel first arrived at Tranquillum, she seemed to worship the entire idea of Masha, believing that she could truly help her. Carmel had lots of pent-up anger at her husband for cheating on her, leading to violent outbursts from time to time.

While those scenes were fine, things really picked up when it was revealed that Masha was the person who Carmel's husband cheated on her with. On top of that, Carmel got revenge by being the person to shoot Masha years prior. That added up with Carmel's violent moments and really made for some of the show's most intense scenes.

Jessica & Ben

Samara Weaving & Melvin Gregg Nine Perfect Strangers

It would've been nice to see more of Ben (Melvin Gregg) and Jessica Chandler (Samara Weaving). The married couple came in and seemingly didn't have as much trauma as the others. They were good looking and were rich after Ben won the lotto. Things weren't as they seemed though, as Jessica struggled with self-esteem and their marriage was on the rocks.

They were cute together and seeing them overcome their issues was welcome. The thing holding them back was that viewers didn't see it happening enough. Too often were the Chandlers sidelined or given less screen time than everyone else. In the end, the fact that they seem to end up running Tranquillum actually feels pretty out of place and random.

Delilah & Masha

Finding out that Delilah and Masha had a secret affair going on seemed like the kind of thing that would lead to them working together. Hiding things from Yao would suggest they were closer and that Delilah would likely be more in tune with Masha's ideas for the residents of Tranquillum.

The opposite turned out to be true as Delilah disagreed vehemently and challenged Masha at almost every turn. That actually made their scenes together hit harder because you could tell that Delilah was hurting that she had to go against someone she cared about to do the right thing. It seemed like even Masha understood when the cops arrived in the finale.

Heather & Napoleon

The very first scene featuring the Marconis lets you know a lot about them. Napoleon (Michael Shannon) was overly positive and trying to find the best in everything while his wife Heather (Asher Keddie) looked to be pretty sad and not interested in what her husband was doing. Those thought processes stemmed from their loss.

Their son took his own life and they went opposite ways with how to handle it. Watching them get through this while also coming to grips with the part they both might've played in his death made for gripping television, boosted by the performances of the two actors. They're one of the few duos who feels like they've come out of Tranquillum for the better.

Carmel & Lars

Lars and Carmel talking by a large tree in Nine Perfect Strangers

At first, Carmel was at odds with Lars Lee (Luke Evans). He wasn't shy about making sarcastic comments that got under the skin of other guests but Carmel's violent history triggered her more. Things reached a point where she even leaped over the table to choke him in front of everyone.

However, they actually grew to be closer than most other guests. Lars helped Carmel at a time when she was struggling with seeing Ben and Jessica being so happy and in love. He told her that she was beautiful and he seemed to have her back at every turn going forward. It wasn't the kind of turnaround that most viewers saw coming.

Frances & Tony

Tony and Frances kissing

There were times where it seemed like Frances Welty (Melissa McCarthy) and Tony Hogburn (Bobby Cannavale) were on a totally different show from the other guests. They would miss key events or team-building exercises for various reasons and when they stayed behind, it led to them bonding.

Things were antagonistic at first, with the two annoying one another. Over time, they opened up to each other about their troubled pasts. Frances and Tony ended up getting romantically involved and were even willing to leave Tranquillum early together to pursue something. Whether the ending of the show was legitimate or not, they seemed happy together.

Lars & Zoe

This was the most unexpected friendship on the show and it turned out to be the best and the sweetest. Lars seemed like a shady character at first but that was because he was investigating Tranquillum. He immediately found a friend in young Zoe Marconi (Grace Van Patten) and despite their age difference, they found relatable ground.

It seemed like Zoe appreciated the brutal honesty of Lars early on and he saw someone he could kind of take under his wing. Lars shared his troubled past with his ex-boyfriend while Zoe told him more about her relationship with her twin sibling than she did to anyone else. You also got the sense that Lars was very protective of her, which was appreciated.
