Without a doubt, Nightwing and Daredevil are two of the best street fighters to ever call themselves superheroes. Battle-tested, hard-hitting, resilient, and with a knack for asymmetrical fighting, both have no problems handling themselves while fighting in a cramped urban landscape. But what if they fought each other?

There are few superheroes in the DC or Marvel universes who are more experienced in hand-to-hand combat than Nightwing and Daredevil. Dick Grayson got his start in street fighting at the ripe age of eight as Robin, the sidekick to one of the most exacting and punishing mentors in comics - Batman. Indeed, Batman was not averse to letting Robin experience the full pain of crime-fighting, which he believed would make Dick a better superhero and partner. Similarly, Matt Murdock was born into a combat-first family. His father was an accomplished heavyweight boxer who taught his son from an early age how to defend himself in a fight. Those basic fighting skills were further enhanced during his tutelage under the blind martial arts master Stick, and his training with the ninja clan known as “the Hand.”

Naturally, fighting abilities are just one element of a superhero's ability. Notably, it is in their other abilities that Nightwing and Daredevil begin to differentiate themselves. For Nightwing, the key difference is his comfortability using technology. As the original member of the Bruce Wayne/Batman superhero family tree, he understands the benefits that using technology gives a superhero without superpowers. This point is most obviously demonstrated in Nightwing’s suit, which is a body-wide expansion of Batman’s utility belt. It not only provides Nightwing with a cache of weapons and tools to overcome his opponent but also works to make the best of his inherent skills as a highly-trained and experienced acrobat.

For Daredevil, the secret sauce is his superpowers. While his contact with radioactive liquid blinded him, it also amplified his other senses to superhuman levels. For instance, it augmented his hearing so that he can hear the heartbeat of others more than ten feet away. This allows him to differentiate the status of that heartbeat, such as reading it to understand whether the person is happy or scared. Similarly, he has developed a “bat-like” sonar that allows him to know the precise location of any object in his periphery. Most importantly, through his training with Stick, Daredevil has learned to integrate his heightened sensitivities with his martial training to enhance his agile lethality.

So, who would win in a fight between two equally skilled, experienced, and mentally tough opponents? Based on their inherent talents and skills, the likely outcome would be a standstill. There is no skill that either possesses that gives them a significant edge over the other. However, if added abilities are taken into consideration, Daredevil’s heightened senses significantly outweigh Nightwing’s technological prowess. Indeed, Daredevil could lure Nightwing into a situation -like a pitch black room- that plays to his sensory perceptions but reduces Nightwing’s tech capabilities. It would be an all-out slugfest that would ultimately be won by Daredevil.
