Warning: contains spoilers for Teen Titans Academy #5!

In the latest issue of Teen Titans Academy, Red X - the mysterious new nemesis of Nightwing - reveals he is forming his own team of anti-Titans. Since the beginning of the series, someone has taken on Dick Grayson's old Red X identity, making it their own and choosing to faithfully embody the antihero persona. While the rogue alias was meant to be a simple cover for Dick Grayson used in his past adventures, it seems as though the new Red X has a genuine mission and is now recruiting students away from Nightwing's Titans Academy.

In Teen Titans Academy #5 from writer Tim Sheridan and artist Steve Lieber, the origin of the Bat-Pack is revealed in a flashback to before they were enrolled at the Titans' new hero-school. After living on the streets of Gotham as orphans, the trio known as the Bat-Pack (Bratgirl, Chupacabra, and Megabat) discovered that the administrator of their children's home was selling kids to an evil scientist named Dr. Grusel seeking to replicate the work of Dr. Kirk Langstrom, aka the Man-Bat. In the aftermath of their investigation and subsequent brawl, Chupacabra was experimented on, which resulted in him being granted bat-like features. Witnessing the group's bravery and detective skills, Nightwing decided to take them on as his protégés, enrolling them in Titans Academy.

However, the end of the issue reveals the Bat-Pack are telling their backstory to none other than Red X himself. Once he hears their origins, the mysterious rogue decides to unmask in front of them, revealing his true identity to win the trio over and convince them he can be trusted. Red X then leaves their dorm room, but not before offering them a place by his side, confirming that Red X is seeking to build a team of his own to rival Nightwing and the Teen Titans.

Red X certainly left an impression on the Bat-Pack, as they decide to wait on telling Nightwing who Red X really is, choosing to keep it to themselves for the time being instead. Soon after, they're informed summer break has arrived, which gives the Bat-Pack time to figure out what it is they truly want. While they were taken under Nightwing's wing, they don't actually hold him in particularly high esteem, as they all much prefer the Dark Knight. Likewise, they all seem to respond well to whoever Red X really is, and the interaction leaves a particular impression on Chupacabra, with Red X hinting that Nightwing stalled rescuing him in order to have another superpowered kid to recruit.

It looks like Red X wants to make the ultimate power move against Nightwing and his fellow Titans by stealing their students in order to build his own team. However, it also seems as though Red X might be laying low while school's out for the summer, though it would be very surprising is he didn't show up on the first day back to get the Bat-Pack's answer to his offer. With DC's Future State: Teen Titans suggesting Red X could be the person to destroy Nightwing's school, it's clear their jousting will continue over future issues of Teen Titans Academy.
