Warning: contains spoilers for Suicide Squad: King Shark #1!

Defacer, Nightwing's former girlfriend, is getting the Suicide Squad treatment due to the fallout of their messy break-up. Defacer is a graffiti artist villain, and has found herself in Belle Reve after defacing a statue of Nightwing (which much of Bludhaven found pretty funny). In Suicide Squad: King Shark #1 - available as part of Free Comic Book Day from Tim Seeley and Scott Kolins - readers get a chance to see what it's like being a low-level criminal who ends up in Belle Reve, right before Defacer is drafted onto Amanda Waller's Suicide Squad.

In 2017's Nightwing vol. 4, Defacer ran a group known as the Run-Offs; former villains who formed a support group in Bludhaven. Nightwing and Defacer met when Dick Grayson interviewed for a volunteer position at the Community Center. Defacer - aka Shawn Tsang - carried a grudge, having been arrested at a young age due to Batman and Nightwing (then Robin), but the two grew close and began dating. Their rocky love life saw them profess their love but ultimately break up, and Defacer was deeply hurt when Nightwing - true to his reputation as a womanizer - apparently blew her off for several months, ignoring all attempts at communication.

In retaliation, Defacer does what she does best, donning her rocket boots and defacing the statue of Nightwing in Bludhaven. Nightwing says that Defacer has a habit of "look[ing] for reasons to ruin things," and defacing a statue of her ex because he has not returned her calls is certainly a way to close the book on their relationship for good. Unfortunately, it turns out Nightwing hadn't been returning her calls because he had been shot in the head and completely lost his memory. Because Defacer was on parole after a history of "large-scale public vandalism," the judge throws the book at her and she ends up in Belle Reve, trapping her in Amanda Waller's favorite recruiting pool.

After an interaction with supervillain Hot Take leads to King Shark coming to her defense, Defacer is drafted into the Suicide Squad. Amanda Waller wants to send King Shark out on another mission but, due to his biology, is unable to outfit him with one of her signature chips. Waller decides to send Defacer out with King Shark while he visits his homeland as a bit of an insurance policy - convince King Shark to come back, and Waller won't blow off her head.

This take on "normal criminal in extraordinary circumstances" is certainly a unique one. Defacer is far from an A-list super-villain, which makes her a perfect candidate for the Suicide Squad treatment, but she's also someone who was trying to leave law-breaking behind, and is arrested for a relatively minor offense then forced to risk her life because of it. While Nightwing's lack of contact was totally explainable and wasn't intended as cruelty, falling in love with Dick Grayson has turned out to be one of the worst things that ever happened to Shawn, and both she and Dick will have to deal with that going forward.

Dick and Shawn's relationship was an interesting facet of a prior run of Nightwing, and explored how the hero and villain could reconcile their worldviews and histories with the fact they truly loved each other. The fact that Defacer ends up drafted onto the Suicide Squad because of how her relationship with Nightwing ended is a tragic epilogue to their time together, though at least for fans, it means Shawn isn't forgotten, even if the alternative is a life-threatening mission with King Shark.
