Warning: The following feature contains SPOILERS for Nightwing #78.

Dick Grayson may have to change his nickname to Rich, following the news that Nightwing is now wealthier than Batman. This revelation, and the surprising source of Dick Grayson's windfall, were revealed in the penultimate scene of Nightwing's fresh solo comic.

The past few months have been turbulent ones for the Bat-Family, with Gotham City devastated by the Joker War event and a new mayor with an anti-vigilante agenda being elected. While Batman was able to recover his company's holdings, which had been stolen by the Joker and used to finance his war on Gotham, he was ousted from his role on the board of Wayne Enterprises and faced a host of regulators now watching every penny going in and out of the company. This meant that the Bat-Family as a whole could no longer depend upon a steady supply of cutting-edge crime-fighting technology since Bruce Wayne was publicly having to live on a more modest budget to conceal his secret identity.

Dick Grayson was better prepared for this than most of his fellow vigilantes, having been established by earlier stories as having a trust fund based on his parent's estate and the insurance payoff from their deaths. Nightwing #78 by Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo also reestablished that Dick owned the apartment block where he lived in the city of Blüdhaven, so he was collecting rent from his tenants, but that was meant more to act as a cover for his own vigilante lifestyle than a serious source of income. Thankfully, just as he was contemplating raising the rent to cover his expenses, Dick discovered that he was the chief heir to the estate of Bruce Wayne's butler, Alfred Pennyworth.

Nightwing #78 Dick Grayson Learns About Inheritance

The news was delivered by Barbara Gordon, who had been asked to act as the executor of Alfred's will. She presented Dick with a bank balance containing "a whole lot of zeroes" and a letter, which she had not read. The letter revealed that Alfred had become a billionaire several times over, thanks to a large amount of Wayne Enterprises stock he had been given in exchange for acting as Bruce Wayne's legal guardian and the generous salary Bruce paid him as an adult. Between this and some sound investments, Alfred Pennyworth died with "a ludicrous amount of wealth I had no need for" and an estate he thought would best be managed by Grayson because Dick had proven himself to be the one person best able to use the money he had to help people in need.

It remains to be seen how Nightwing will take advantage of his newfound fortune. It cannot be denied, however, that Alfred chose well in making Dick Grayson his heir. More than any other hero in the Bat-Family, Dick Grayson understands that heroism is about helping people and not just preventing harm. It was this trait above all others that made Alfred proud to make Nightwing his heir and proud to call him son.
