Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon, aka Nightwing and Batgirl, have easily the most popular romance in DC Comics. For decades, the former Boy Wonder and Oracle have come together, fallen apart, and gotten back together again, breaking hearts along the way. However, Nightwing's new era has seen him reunite in a deep and significant way with Batgirl, and it seems that DC is now teasing a proposal between the two in upcoming issues.

The tempestuous relationship between Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon recently stabilized, as the globe-trotting heroes have each adopted a new status quo. Using new armor to fight as Batgirl after a historic injury to her spine, Babs is currently training Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown as the new Batgirls. Meanwhile, following a vast inheritance from Wayne family butler Alfred Pennyworth, Dick Grayson has become a public figure, vowing to rid the city of Blüdhaven of its network of corruption and act as a safety net for those who would otherwise be allowed to fall. To aid in this mammoth undertaking, Nightwing has called on Batgirl many times, with the two falling back into their romance and functionally living together when not needed elsewhere.

However, it seems DC may be about to alter that romantic status quo with a proposal. Solicits for upcoming issues shared by League of Comic Geeks mention a significant question, with the summary for issue #96 stating "...as Dick and Babs’s two hearts do find their happy place next to each other, one question they ask each other proves difficult to answer," and #97 following up with, "…Batgirl gives Nightwing her answer. And they have a long talk with each other about what that means." Meanwhile, Jamal Campbell's variant cover art for issue #96 sees the two embracing while surrounded by flowers, and in issue #95 (from Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo), Batwoman and Nightwing discuss romance, with Kathy Kane telling Dick that the biggest mistake she ever made was not marrying her former partner Maggie Sawyer.

It's easy to see how hearing about a missed chance at matrimonial bliss would get Nightwing thinking, opening up the possibility that the "question" DC is hinting at is a proposal - indeed, as suggested in the summary for Nightwing #96, it would be very much in character for the two take-charge heroes to propose to each other at the same time. A wedding between the two has been on the cards for a long time, and they actually did get married in Dark Nights: Death Metal -The Last Stories Of The DC Universe #1, though this took place in a now defunct reality on the eve of the end of the world.

There's always the possibility that DC intends to pull the rug from under readers, but it certainly seems like Nightwing is gearing up to a proposal, with Dick and Babs in a stronger place than in few times in their history. DC has pushed back on writers having characters marry before - indeed, Batwoman and Maggie Sawyer are the most infamous example of this apparent policy. It's also worth keeping in mind that especially in comics, a marriage is no guarantee a couple is forever (Marvel rewrote Spider-Man's entire life to make it so he'd never married Mary Jane.) However, fans have praised Taylor and Redondo's run so far for depicting a happy, mutually supportive relationship, meaning that if one or both of them do pop the question, it's possible they'll get that rarest of all things - a relatively uneventful superhero wedding.

Only upcoming issues of Nightwing will show if Dick and Barbara are headed down the aisle (with the upcoming issue 100 offering the perfect opportunity for something special), but it's possible that perhaps the most fan-favorite will they/won't they relationship in comics is about to enter a whole new era, as DC teases that marriage is on the cards for Nightwing and Batgirl.

Nightwing #96 is available now from DC Comics.
