With the new era of the Titans on the horizon, Tom Taylor shockingly reveals that the beloved hero Nightwing isn't the heart of the team. An interview with the writer and artist Nicola Scott shines a light on the team's true central member.

In an interview with Popverse, Titans' creative team Tom Taylor and Nicola Scott discuss what fans can expect of the upcoming series. After discussing where the Titans' members are now after the events of Dark Crisis on Infinite Earths, the focus shifts to the dynamic between Beast Boy and Raven, and what it means to explore the two's romantic relationship.

Tom Taylor: As a writer, when I sat down to write this team for the first time, you look for what the dynamics are. Nightwing is the heart of the DC Universe, certainly at the moment, but Gar is the soul of the Titans. It became clear to me very early, building off what Josh [Williamson] was doing with Dark Crisis, where Gar had been there. We can’t just forget about that, we have to bring it here as well.

Taylor mentions that when he took on the title, he did an analysis of each Titan and where they stood in the team. While Taylor contends that Nightwing is the "heart of the DC Universe", he claims that it's actually Garfield Logan who is the soul of the Titans. Taylor mentions that Beast Boy's role in the new series builds off what he went through during Dark Crisis.

Beast Boy is the Titans' Core Character, Not Nightwing

The younger generation of heroes went through a lot during the recent Dark Crisis. Possessed by the Great Darkness, Deathstroke attempted to destroy the legacies of heroes for good and made his point by seemingly killing Beast Boy. However, Garfield managed to survive the attack and hold on long enough to heal. As things grew darker, Nightwing decided to step up and become the leader the world needed. In the wake of the event, the Justice League requested Nightwing and his crew take their place as the core superhero team in the DC Universe.

But interestingly, Taylor refers to Beast Boy as the soul of the team rather than Nightwing. In addition to leading several versions of the Titans, few would dispute that Dick Grayson is the far more popular character. But while Beast Boy isn't exactly leadership material, his positive attitude and tendency to see the brighter side of things is something that helps bind the team together. With the Titans about to step into the limelight as the premier superhero team, they're going to need to be more cohesive than ever. And the best person for that job is the one who tries to keep a smile on everyone's face.

Beast Boy Will Keep the Titans Together on Their New Mission

Beast Boy is often thought of as the jokester of the team, and while he does provide comedic relief, it's much deeper than that. He strongly cares about his friends and is a very loyal person. Nightwing is a good leader and quite friendly, but Beast Boy makes it his business to make people laugh and ensures his friends have someone to confide in. Even after experiencing a traumatic event like Dark Crisis, Beast Boy is still going to be the same affable ball of energy that brings his pals together. Fans can see Nightwing and the rest of his team in Titans #1, on sale May 16th.
