DC Comics’ new Superman, Jon Kent, is teaming up with Nightwing. The two sons of DC’s most iconic superheroes were bound to cross paths eventually.

Previously making headlines for his relationship with Jay Nakamura, Jon Kent’s Superman has officially entered the mainstream as the next Man of Steel. While he is adjusting to his new status, Jon is meeting many other heroes of the DC Universe. Teaming up with Wally West’s Flash, there seems to be some potential for a second generation World’s Finest. Soon, Jon will be meeting Batman’s first sidekick, Dick Grayson.

In a tweet by writer Tom Taylor, he announced that Nightwing and the new Superman will meet in Nightwing #89. In the announcement, he wrote, “It’s happening. #Nightwing and #Superman: Son of Kal-El. The crossover starts in February’s Nightwing #89. With @Bruno_Redondo_F . @thedcnation.” As the writer of both Nightwing and Superman: Son of Kal-El, it was a matter of time until Taylor brought the two heroes into one story. Dick Grayson and Jon Kent’s crossover is set to begin in February, hinting that subsequent issues will follow their adventures together. The issue’s cover illustrated by Bruno Redondo has been released, as seen below:

Tom Taylor’s Nightwing run has been praised by fans, similar to the reception for Superman: Son of Kal-El. Although the two titles tackle very different subject matter, they are tonally compatible, making a crossover feel like a natural progression of their stories. As Jon matures into the role of Superman, he could use the support from someone like Nightwing, who has had much more experience in the field. For a time, Dick even took on his father’s mantle as Gotham City’s Dark Knight in Battle For The Cowl. On occasion, Nightwing has had to rise to the responsibility of filling Bruce Wayne’s role.

The two DC heroes might have a lot in common, but they also contrast each other in many ways, adding to the intrigue for a potential crossover. Whereas Jon has grown up to be like his father Kal-El, Dick has attempted to escape Bruce’s shadow and become his own man. This might be the exact perspective that Nightwing can offer, as Jon faces problems that he never saw his dad take on. His name might technically be Superman, but for him to truly embody the part, he will need to make it his own.
