The director of DC's upcoming Nightwing film says Dick Grayson hasn't been cast yet, but the current search is an expansive one. While the DCEU has a number of film's slated to arrive in the next few years, there are even more movies they've announced with no clear release date. Chief among those projects are a trio of Bat Family films, with Matt Reeve's The Batman presumably leading the charge. Alongside the solo Dark Knight movie, Joss Whedon is still working on his Batgirl film while The LEGO Batman Movie director Christ McKay is prepping Nightwing.

Almost immediately after the success of LEGO Batman, DC and Warner Bros announced the Nightwing film. Since that time, however, not much more information has been revealed. While Dick Grayson will be portrayed by Breton Thwaites in DC's Titans series, the film remains without a lead. Now, we know a bit more about that casting process.

Responding to fan's question for an update on Nightwing on Twitter, McKay confirmed that no actor has been brought on board. The director further said he was "casting a wide net" to find the perfect actor and ensure the project was as good as it could be.

...because we need to find the perfect person. We need to get the script right. We need this to movie to blow your mind.— Chris McKay (@buddboetticher) September 26, 2017

It's good to know that McKay is less concerned with nabbing a big name immediately than doing his due diligence and finding the perfect performer for the part - wherever they may currently be. For fans keen for updates, this may not mollify them, but it bodes well for Nightwing as a movie.

In the meantime, the director hasn't been shy about discussing his vision for the film. Though we don't know the specifics of where it's going to fit into the DCEU timeline, Nightwing will lean on Grayson's circus past. And keeping true to the acrobatic nature of the hero, the movie will feature lots of practical stunt work. While this is fairly common on TV shows, superhero films can sometimes lose the action amongst the spectacle. Considering that, fans should be pleased to see Nightwing demonstrate the considerable abilities he learned from his time fighting alongside Batman.

With word arriving earlier today that Flashpoint is finally moving along, hopefully more news regarding Nightwing will also be right around the corner. Though DC announced a new slate of films at Comic-Con this summer, Nightwing's exclusion isn't a sign that it's not happening. Instead, McKay and those involved are just working to make sure they make the best version of the film.
