Nick Jonas is ready to suit up as a superhero in the Nightwing solo film if he is offered the role. Included in the slew of projects currently in the DC Films' docket, the movie is set to focus on Dick Grayson's version of the character after he has retired from his stint as Batman’s vigilante partner, Robin. While it's curious just where this narrative will fit in the overall blueprint for the budding franchise, the production is quietly moving forward with director Chris McKay at the helm, nevertheless.
As of now, story details about the Nightwing movie are still thin on the surface. But joining McKay in working on the film is The Accountant screenwriter Bill Dubuque, who will pen the standalone's story. No release date has been confirmed for the film and McKay does not have any problem with it, explaining that he would rather take things slow and make sure that all is in place instead of being pressured by a deadline.
Speaking with Comicbook.com during the press junket promoting his latest movie, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Jonas was asked whether he is interested in playing Grayson on the big screen, as several fans online are campaigning for him to play the role. Although the musician/actor did not give any indication of being a fan of the character, or comic books in general, he appears to be excited with the idea, calling it "awesome":
"I would. I'd be super down for this. I didn't know there was people vying for me to play this role but keep the chatter alive people! If you vote for me, maybe they'll cast me in it! And then, I don't know, I'll thank you all later."
If Jonas is really open to taking the role of Grayson, he might want his people to reach out to folks behind the project with casting for Nightwing already underway. McKay has even rolled out an open casting call to make sure that they are able to find the right actor for the role regardless of his Hollywood status. Throwing his name into the pool of possible candidates right away may also give the Disney Channel alum an advantage, especially when other a slew of other actors such as Dave Franco, Jared Padalecki, Steven R. McQueen, Drake Bell, Finn Wittrock, Dacre Montgomery, Dev Patel, Zac Efron and Steven Yeun are reportedly also in the running for the role.
Jonas' chances of getting noticed by McKay and Warner Bros. can definitely be boosted by his upcoming performance in Jumanji where he plays the role of Alex, the mysterious guide, reminiscent to Robin Williams' gig in the first movie. The sequel is set 20 years after its predecessor and follows four teenagers who were in detention. Unlike the original outing which has a boardgame backdrop, this new one gets a contemporary update with a virtual reality adventure. Karen Gillan, Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black and Kevin Hart also star in the film.
If that is not enough of an audition piece for Nightwing, Jonas can be next seen in a slew of upcoming projects like the Night at the Museum sequel, Careful What You Wish For, and the mixed martial arts TV series Kingdom. The latter could especially help his cause given that McKay has previously revealed that whoever gets the role will be subjected to intense physical training for stuntwork.
