Warning! Spoilers ahead for Red Hood and The Outlaws #48

Nightwing could not be in more trouble during the Joker War that's overtaken Gotham City. As a result of his already fragile psyche due to his head trauma, Dick Grayson was just starting to get back into the game as a vigilante and was even considering reclaiming the Nightwing mantle when Joker got his hands on him. Using a memory crystal, Joker hypnotized Dick into thinking that he was a part of Joker's family, and not the former ward and Robin of the Batman. With false implanted memories in his head, Dick Grayson becomes the Son of Joker, and it looks as though he just got a pretty gross inheritance in Red Hood and the Outlaws #48.

The new Son of Joker has already done his "father's" bidding for a little while now, most notably in helping Joker's new girlfriend Punchline beat and capture Batgirl, using her as bait to draw the other former Robins such as Tim Drake and Jason Todd into a trap. However, Punchline and Grayson did have a mission just prior to this, involving Jason Hood and the foster home he grew up in: Ma Gunn's School for Boys. There, Punchline is beating Duela Dent, the Joker's Daughter (whose not actually his daughter, just a psycho teen) with a crowbar. While Duela is no doubt crazy, wearing the Joker's old face that he cut off back at the beginning of New 52, Red Hood still feels compelled to save her from a death he knows all too well. However, a masked Grayson arrives to take down the Red Hood.

Grayson wins the fight and knocks Jason out, preventing him from saving Dent before Grayson and Punchline flee the scene and blow the foster home to pieces. Among the wreckage, Jason finds Duela's body, and regrets his inability to save her...or so he thinks. It's later revealed that the agents of Joker still have Duela with them, still alive, as they dressed up the body of a dead homeless woman to make Jason think Duela had died. At the end of the issue, Punchline has taken Joker's old face-off of Duela, most likely to give to Grayson, a super gross inheritance if there ever was one.

While Jason is currently on his way to falling into the previously mentioned trap, it will interesting to see if he'll ever learn the truth about Duela and save her from whatever other tortures Joker has planned for her before ultimately killing her. It seems likely that he will. Meanwhile, Grayson has taken yet another unwilling step towards embracing his new role as the Son of Joker, even potentially taking on the face of the evil he now considers to be his father. Hopefully, one of the other members of the Bat-Family or even Batman himself will be able to save Nightwing from the Joker's grasp, and bring him back to the light. Fans will know more as the Joker War continues this summer.
