The Nightwing movie hasn't begun casting yet, thus refuting rumors that the role of Dick Grayson has been filled. Warner Bros. officially launched their unofficially titled DC Extended Universe last year with Zack Snyder's Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and they are continuing to build upon the newly-formed shared universe with the filmmaker's Justice League this month. And while the studio already has most of their slate planned for the next few years, there are several movies currently in various stages of development, including Nightwing.

The LEGO Batman Movie director Chris McKay is attached to helm the project as part of Warners' DCEU, though the studio didn't promote the film at San Diego Comic-Con 2017 this past summer, instead choosing to highlight other major productions such as Flashpoint and Wonder Woman 2. McKay said the reason for the film's absence was because they were taking the time to get everything right before moving forward with release dates and such, and then he later praised Warner Bros.' director-driven approach. And part of getting the film right is finding the right actor who can handle the comic book's "grueling" action.

Over the past few months, several actors have thrown their hats into the ring to play the eponymous superhero, including Power Rangers and Stranger Things star Dacre Montgomery. The actor tweeted and then quickly deleted an image teasing his interest (or involvement) in Nightwing last night, and the film's director has now denied that the casting process has begun. McKay also hinted that when they do start casting, they will have an open casting call (something he also previously implied).

We haven’t started the process of casting NIGHTWING yet but when we do you’ll hear something because our search will be far and wide— Chris McKay (@buddboetticher) November 5, 2017

As fans of the comic book character understand, Nightwing is an expert aerialist and someone who's comfortable with various forms of martial arts, so the actor who inevitably portrays him in live-action will also need to be able to exhibit the same level of skill that the superhero has in the comics - or at least be close enough for it to be convincing. And while the casting process may not start for quite some time, McKay is happy enough with the script to the point that he believes that Nightwing could enter pre-production next year.

Yes I think it can provided the script is crazy great— Chris McKay (@buddboetticher) November 5, 2017

Although much of the project remains a mystery at this stage, we know that the Nightwing movie will feature nods to Dick Grayson's past, while also possibly connecting to Batman's (Ben Affleck) story in Matt Reeves' The Batman. But it sounds like it will be a while before any concrete information is revealed.
