As recently reported, DC Comics’ ongoing Nightwing series has been assigned a new, highly trusted creative duo. This change in leadership promises a return to some semblance of normalcy for Dick Grayson who has endured a tumultuous and traumatic several months. The sidekick-turned-headliner has suffered so much abuse he’s probably as black and blue as his uniform. Even Dick’s love life has been a disaster.  Thankfully, the pages of Nightwing #78 will not only relocate Dick to his old stomping grounds, but may reconnect the hero with the romantic partner “that got away.”

Dick Grayson’s list of love interests is longer than Batman’s rogue gallery. Betty Kane, the original Bat-girl, was created in 1961 for the sole purpose of attracting the original Robin. Since then, Dick has dated classmates at Hudson University, his building superintendent in Blüdhaven, and even a former flame from his days in Haly’s Circus. Yet, Nightwing’s most serious relationships have been with other superheroes. He had a short-lived flirtation with Zatanna, cohabited with Huntress, and almost married Starfire before a Trigon-controlled Raven ruined their nuptials. Yet, Nightwing’s most recent romantic misadventure involved a bartender named Bea.

Beginning in Batman # 55, Nightwing develops amnesia after taking a bullet to the head. A bartender named Bea allows the newly dubbed Ric Grayson to recuperate in her building and they begin an ill-fated love affair. When Dick’s memories come flooding back in Nightwing #68, it seems that he and Bea can start anew and finally be happy. Sadly, a second assassination attempt by hitman KGBeast makes Nightwing realize that Bea will never be safe as long as they’re together, and he breaks off their relationship. This unfortunate series of circumstances may have just opened the door for Nightwing to rekindle a relationship with an old flame.

Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo will be the creative team at the helm of the upcoming Nightwing #78. Taylor and Redondo have collaborated in the past and are no strangers to success. This dynamic duo was responsible for the video-game based Injustice in 2013 and recently concluded a compelling run of Suicide Squad. Both series met with universal acclaim. Their involvement in Nightwing’s upcoming arc should insure that both his heroic exploits and romantic entanglements will be grounded in DC history while remaining wholly unpredictable. So will Nightwing finally get to be with Batgirl?

DC Comics’ Nightwing may have grown up in the circus, but he isn’t very good at juggling relationships. Just because Dick is single, living in Blüdhaven, and working side-by-side with Batgirl doesn’t mean they will find their happily-ever-after. Batgirl #50 clearly depicts Barbara committing to a relationship with former GCPD commissioner Jason Bard. Babs told Bard, “Let’s give this a real go.” Did that relationship end as quickly as it began? And is Dick really over Bea? For the immediate future it seems that Nightwing’s Facebook relationship status will get to remain: “It’s Complicated.”
